Samsung’s First Tri-Fold Smartphone Might Be More Limited Than Expected

Under a week ago, South Korean news outlets shared fresh details about Samsung’s upcoming tri-fold smartphone. To summarize, the Sisa Journal mentioned that Samsung intends to produce 300,000 units of its Mate XT competitor, which means it will have a limited release.

Production Insights

To put this into perspective, such low production numbers mean that for every thirty Galaxy Z Fold6 smartphones made (currently priced at $1,264 on Amazon), there will be one tri-fold device. The production figures for the new Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition and Samsung W25 are still unclear, but it appears Samsung initially offered these in small batches.

Release Timeline

Ross Young has indicated that Samsung might still aim for a release in the first quarter of 2026, at least partially. In contrast, The Elec suggests the company could be looking at a 2025 launch, with mass production expected to begin in the second quarter of 2025.

Comparison of Units

Regardless, the same source reports that Samsung plans to produce only 200,000 units of the tri-fold smartphone, which is just a tenth of the expected sales for the Galaxy Z Fold7. Meanwhile, The Elec notes that Samsung aims to manufacture 3 million units of the Galaxy Z Flip7, but only around 900,000 for the Galaxy Z Flip FE.
