Samsung Galaxy G Fold: Set to Outperform Huawei Mate XT

Key Takeaways

1. Samsung Display introduced a new concept design of the Flex G, which may become the basis for a future tri-fold smartphone.
2. Huawei is continuing to develop the Mate XT, a foldable phone design presented at MWC 2025, similar to Samsung’s Flex S.
3. The Mate XT features a 10.2-inch foldable screen with a 6.4-inch cover display, while the Flex G has no cover display.
4. Samsung plans to add a 6.49-inch cover display to the Galaxy G Fold, similar in size to the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition’s cover display.
5. A launch for the Galaxy G Fold is expected in Q3 or Q4 of 2025, with potential mentions at the upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event.

Earlier this week, Samsung Display presented a new iteration of the Flex G. Although it’s merely a concept at this stage, this design is predicted to form the basis of Samsung’s future tri-fold smartphone.

Huawei’s Approach

Ross Young from Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) confirms that this prediction remains accurate. Meanwhile, Huawei seems to be continuing with the design style of the Mate XT, a concept that Samsung Display also showcased at MWC 2025 under the name Flex S.

Design Comparison

The Mate XT features a unique design where the left third of its 10.2-inch foldable screen acts as a 6.4-inch cover display when fully folded. On the other hand, the Flex G has two inward-folding thirds that protect the foldable display when not in use, meaning it lacks a cover display entirely.

Reportedly, Samsung intends to address this limitation by adding a 6.49-inch cover display to what is currently known as the Galaxy G Fold. Interestingly, this is roughly the same size as the cover display found in the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition, and about 0.2 inches larger than the cover display in the Galaxy Z Fold6 (currently priced at $1,549 on Amazon).

Launch Expectations

Young believes that a launch in Q3 or Q4 of 2025 is more probable than an announcement at Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event. Nevertheless, he thinks there’s a ‘good chance’ that Samsung might mention the Galaxy G Fold during that event, which is mainly expected to highlight the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7.
