Oriolus Pre-Orders OA-JC3 USB DAC & OA-JC5 Tube Amplifier Kits

Oriolus has launched pre-order sales for two audio kits that are easy to put together – the OA-JC3 USB DAC and the OA-JC5 headphone amplifier. These devices use vacuum tubes, which create a warm and rich sound, and can be assembled by beginners without needing to solder any parts.

OA-JC3 DAC Features

The OA-JC3 DAC employs a resistive ladder network (either R2R or R-2R) along with a 12AU7 dual-triode vacuum tube to change the digital signal into an analog audio output. This USB-C DAC supports a variety of music codecs, including MP3, DSD, MQA, and PCM. The analog audio has a frequency range of 20 Hz to 20 KHz (+/- 2 dB) and a signal-to-noise ratio measuring 83 dB. It also maintains a total harmonic distortion of just 0.15% at 1 KHz. The device outputs audio through stereo RCA jacks, with a maximum output of 2V rms. The dimensions of the DAC are 4.9 x 3.9 x 2.8 inches (125 x 100 x 70 mm).

OA-JC5 Amplifier Details

The OA-JC5 amplifier also features the 12AU7 dual-triode vacuum tube, paired with high-power 2SA1943 and 2SC5200 transistors to deliver warm and rich analog audio. It includes stereo RCA input jacks for connecting audio sources. The amplified sound has a frequency response ranging from 10 Hz to 80 KHz (+/- 1 dB) and a signal-to-noise ratio of 90 dB. The total harmonic distortion is a low 0.4% at 1 KHz. Audio is outputted via a 6.35mm (1/4”) audio jack, offering a maximum output of 720 mW at 32 ohm. The amplifier can support headphones with impedances from 8 to 600 ohm and comes with adjustable gain up to +12 dB. It measures 4.9 x 3.9 x 2.8 inches (125 x 100 x 70 mm).

Power Supply Requirements

Both kits necessitate an external USB-C power supply that is compatible with USB PD (power delivery), needing a minimum of 20V 1.5A, though a 20V 2.5A supply is recommended for best performance.

The OA-JC3 USB DAC is priced at 28,600 yen (around $190), while the OA-JC5 amp is available for 24,200 yen (about $160). Both products can be pre-ordered through Cyras Direct in Japan, with a release date set for October 21, 2024. For those eager for a DIY project that involves soldering, they might consider picking up a Bluetooth speaker kit from Amazon or an AM/FM radio kit from Heathkit.
