Motorola Android 15 Update: Release, Devices & Features

The release of Android 15 is just around the corner, and it's set to be unveiled next month. This upcoming version promises several exciting features, including support for satellite connectivity, a theft detection lock, a private space, and shortcuts for paired apps, among others.

Smartphone brands and third-party developers are already working on integrating Android 15 with their custom skins, such as OxygenOS for OnePlus and Hello UI for Motorola, since the Android 15 AOSP is already available.

If you're a Motorola phone user, keep reading to discover all the crucial details about Android 15, including its release date, compatible devices, and the new features it offers.

Motorola Android 15 Release Date

Motorola has yet to announce when it plans to roll out the Android 15 update to its eligible devices. However, based on past releases and the current development stage of Android 15, a prompt rollout seems unlikely.

While Android 15 is complete and its source code is already uploaded to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), the public release is still pending. Google has confirmed a release in October, though the exact date remains unspecified. Reports suggest the stable version will be available to the public by mid-month.

Initially, Google Pixel devices will receive the update, followed by other brands. Companies like OnePlus and Realme typically begin their rollouts in the same month. Unfortunately, Motorola's track record has been less than stellar in recent years. Android 14, for instance, was released last year but only reached Motorola devices earlier this year, long after many brands had completed their rollouts. Consequently, we anticipate Android 15 will reach Motorola devices towards the end of the year or early next year.

What to Expect from Android 15?

Android 15 doesn't introduce many visual changes, so you might not notice a difference just by looking at the home screen. However, it does offer several exciting new features.

Among the most noteworthy is the Theft Detection Lock feature, which employs Google AI to recognize when your device has been taken from you, locking it immediately to prevent data theft. Even if thieves manage to factory reset the device, they cannot activate it without your Google account credentials, rendering the device essentially unusable.

Another significant addition is satellite connectivity, enabling message sending and receiving even in the absence of nearby cell towers, provided you have a clear view of the sky. This feature may require specialized hardware and carrier support. Android 15 also boasts real-time fraud protection, allowing the Google Play Store to detect when apps might misuse device permissions.

To enhance data security, Android 15 introduces partial screen sharing, which allows you to share the screen for a single app, preventing the viewer from accessing other data, including notifications. This feature also supports screen recording.

The Private Space feature lets you hide and secure apps and files you don't want others to access. Additionally, the app archive feature, previously limited to Google Play Store apps, is now integrated into Android 15 to support other app stores, enabling you to archive or unarchive apps, even those installed outside the Play Store.

Google has also announced native earthquake detection for U.S. users in Android 15. There's a new high-quality webcam mode, allowing you to use your Android phone as a webcam for a PC. Finally, you can create shortcuts for your favorite split-screen app pairs.
