The Simpsons: Hit and Run, which came out in 2003, has gained a strong fan base over the years. There are plenty of mods that keep the game fresh, even though it’s been twenty years since it was launched for platforms like PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, and PC.

Game Inspiration and Features

Developed by Radical Entertainment, the game took cues from Grand Theft Auto III. You can see this in its mission-based driving, semi-open-world exploration of Springfield, and the show’s signature satire and humor.

Despite being a game based on a TV show, The Simpsons: Hit and Run surprised many and built a loyal following that lasts even into 2025. The game scored an 80 on Metacritic. Sadly, ongoing rights issues have meant we haven’t seen a sequel or a modern re-release for the game.

Community Efforts

This is where the dedicated modding community comes in to preserve the legacy of The Simpsons: Hit and Run. The latest news comes from a group called Slurm Team, made up of nine volunteer developers. They announced their project back on July 12, 2019, and have since released a demo for Futurama: Hit and Run. This mod completely transforms the Hit and Run experience into the sci-fi world created by Matt Groening.

You can download the game for free from Donut Team’s Mod Bakery website, but you’ll need a legitimate PC version of the original game along with Lucas’ Simpsons: Hit and Run Mod Launcher to get it set up.

Futurama: Hit and Run Details

The mod revamps Springfield into a detailed version of New New York set in the year 3000. It includes pneumatic tubes, sewers filled with mutants, and intricate 3D models crafted from scratch by the Slurm Team.

Currently, the demo features four story missions, one bonus mission, a full custom soundtrack that includes the famous Futurama theme, and exactly ten side gags, with one of them being hidden within the demo.

On October 17, the demo was showcased and quickly went viral online, even attracting the attention of Joe McGinn, a senior game designer from the original Hit and Run. He remarked in the YouTube comments, “As the lead designer of the original game. I can only say… this looks awesome! I want to play it.”
