Huawei Mate 70 Pro+ Benchmarks Show 30% Boost from Kirin 9020

Huawei has just introduced its top-tier Mate 70 series, but, similar to past product reveals, they haven’t shared much about the phone’s processor. While there were initial speculations about a “Kirin 9100” featuring eight ARM Cortex cores, recent updates from China suggest otherwise.

New Chipset Confirmation

Recent images on Weibo, a popular Chinese social media site, confirm that the Mate 70 series is equipped with a new “Kirin 9020” chipset. This naming isn’t entirely unexpected, given that the previous version, the Kirin 9010, powers the Mate 60 series.

Details of the Kirin 9020

The Kirin 9020 comes with a 12-core CPU, which includes two primary cores running at 2.5GHz, six mid-range cores at 2.1GHz, and four efficiency cores that peak at 1.6GHz. However, this core structure might be influenced by hyperthreading tech.

Hyperthreading Capabilities

Hyperthreading allows manufacturers to create two logical cores for every physical core. For example, the Kirin 9010 had a 1+3+4 physical core arrangement, but its main and mid-range cores were hyperthreaded, resulting in a logical layout of 2+6+4. It’s likely that the Kirin 9020 employs a similar approach.

If this speculation holds true, the new System-on-Chip (SoC) may be utilizing HiSilicon’s own Taishan CPU cores for the higher two clusters instead of ARM cores. Nevertheless, the four efficiency cores are expected to be Cortex-A510s, similar to previous 9000-series models.

GPU Information

The graphics processing unit (GPU) seems to be an internal design called the Maleoon 920, which features a top clock speed of 840MHz, surpassing the 750MHz of the Kirin 9010’s Maleoon 910. However, specific information about its architecture or compute unit count is still not available.

Performance Metrics

AnTuTu benchmark results for the Mate 70 Pro+ show a score of 1,248,520 points. While this score doesn’t quite match the latest flagship processors from Qualcomm and MediaTek, it’s nearly a 30% improvement over the Kirin 9010 utilized in the Pura 70 series, which scored around 979,511 points on AnTuTu.
