  • Google Stops Chromecast with Google TV, 4K Android Streamer $24.99

Google Stops Chromecast with Google TV, 4K Android Streamer $24.99

    Key Takeaways

    1. Google has ceased selling the Chromecast with Google TV, focusing on the Google TV Streamer as its primary streaming device.
    2. The Chromecast with Google TV was launched in 2020 as a 4K streaming dongle, followed by a cheaper 1080p version in 2022.
    3. The new Google TV Streamer, introduced in 2022, offers improved specifications, including 32GB of storage, better RAM, and an ethernet port.
    4. There are many alternative streaming devices available in the market from brands like Amazon, Roku, and Walmart’s Onn.
    5. The TiVo Stream 4K is a notable competitor, offering a dongle-like design and a limited-time discount, but it runs on an older Android TV version.

Google has stopped selling the Chromecast with Google TV streaming devices on its online shop, leaving the Google TV Streamer as the only streaming device available from the company.

    Chromecast with Google TV Launch

The Chromecast with Google TV was introduced in 2020 as a 4K streaming dongle that operated on a fresh version of Android TV called Google TV. This device was set at a price of $49.99 and came in several colors along with matching voice remotes.

    New Cheaper Model

In 2022, Google released a more affordable version, which only supported streaming at 1080p. This variant was named the Chromecast with Google TV (HD) and was priced at $29.99. It shared the same design as the 4K version but was sold in just one color.

    Introduction of Google TV Streamer

Last year, Google unveiled the Google TV Streamer, a $100 streaming device that moved away from the dongle style of the Chromecast with Google TV. This 4K streaming device can sit on a TV shelf like the Apple TV 4K and addressed many complaints users had about the Chromecast with Google TV series, such as better storage (32GB compared to 8GB), increased RAM, and a quicker processor.

Additionally, it includes an ethernet port for wired internet and acts as a smart home hub since it has a built-in Thread border router and supports Matter. Its remote is similar to that of the Chromecast with Google TV and comes in two colors.

    Alternatives in the Market

Not many people will feel the absence of the Chromecast with Google TV streamers, as there are plenty of streaming devices on the market, including options from Amazon, Roku, and Walmart’s Onn. If you’re on the hunt for an affordable 4K streamer that operates on Android TV, Amazon currently has one on sale.

One alternative is the TiVo Stream 4K, which features a dongle-like design and, as the name suggests, is capable of streaming in 4K. Launched in 2020 to compete with the Chromecast with Google TV, it originally cost $49.99, but for a limited time, you can snag it for just $24.99 on Amazon. While this is a 50% discount from its launch price, it actually represents a 38% reduction from its list price of $39.99 on Amazon.

    Performance and Features

This device runs on Android TV rather than the newer Google TV and has only 2GB of RAM and a paltry 8GB of storage, although additional storage can be added through the USB-C port. The USB-C port can also be utilized for an ethernet adapter. It features a voice remote with dedicated buttons for Netflix, Live TV, and Google Assistant, and this remote can also control your TV’s power, volume, and input through HDMI CEC.

Paperlike 103: Global Launch of 60 Hz E Ink Monitor

    Key Takeaways

    1. Dasung has launched the Paperlike 103, a portable E Ink monitor, currently available in China for about $270.
    2. The monitor features a 10.3-inch screen with a resolution of 1,872 x 1,404 and a 60 Hz refresh rate.

    4. The Paperlike 103 is part of a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo, with details on global pricing and availability still pending.
    5. The monitor includes a USB-C port for screen mirroring and expansion with computers and smartphones.

Dasung is among the most recognized makers in the E Ink monitor sector. While this technology is commonly seen in e-readers like the Kindle, Dasung has adapted it to create larger, portable displays. Just over a month ago, the company introduced the Paperlike 103, which is currently available in China for about $270. It was uncertain whether this model would be launched globally, but it’s now part of a crowdfunding effort on Indiegogo aimed at an international release. However, details regarding pricing and availability are still not confirmed.

    Size and Resolution

The Paperlike 103 features a diagonal measurement of 10.3 inches, making it relatively compact for a portable monitor. Its screen boasts a resolution of 1,872 x 1,404 with a 4:3 aspect ratio. The E Ink technology provides distinct benefits, such as improved readability under bright lighting conditions, and a front light allows for reading in dim areas. Nevertheless, it is still uncertain whether the Dasung 103 will maintain the advantage of low energy usage given its high refresh rate. The 60 Hz refresh rate could likely lead to increased power consumption compared to slower E Ink screens.

    Features and Usability

This monitor does not support color display; it’s marketed as “perfect for wordsmiths,” meaning it’s aimed at individuals who frequently deal with text and text-oriented software. However, with the 60 Hz refresh rate, users can expect smoother mouse movements, enhanced page scrolling, and improved video playback, even though it will be in grayscale. Additionally, a USB-C port enables screen mirroring and expansion capabilities for both computers and smartphones.

    Crowdfunding and Future Plans

Indiegogo is the platform where the Paperlike 103 is currently featured, and it serves as a pivotal step towards a worldwide release. Despite the excitement around this new monitor, the specifics regarding its price and when it will be available are still to be determined. The anticipation builds as tech enthusiasts wait for further updates regarding this innovative product.

  • LG Financial Forecast: OLED Monitor Sales to Keep Rising

LG Financial Forecast: OLED Monitor Sales to Keep Rising

    Key Takeaways

    1. OLED monitors offer exact colors and deep black levels, but their higher price has limited widespread use compared to IPS and VA panels.
    2. LG predicts the OLED monitor market will grow from $75 million in 2022 to over $1 billion by 2025, indicating increasing acceptance of the technology.
    3. Multiple brands, including Samsung and MSI, are entering the OLED market, providing consumers with a greater variety of options.
    4. Competition has led to price reductions for OLED monitors and the introduction of smart features to combat burn-in concerns.
    5. Enhancements in brightness for OLED monitors could attract even more customers in the future.

OLED monitors are known for their exact colors and deep black levels. The biggest hurdle for their widespread use has been their price, which tends to be higher compared to regular IPS and VA panels. Nevertheless, sales of OLED monitors are continuing to rise. A report from January indicated that these displays made up 22 percent of all new monitors sold. Now, LG is making financial forecasts that might ease concerns about the fast acceptance of OLED technology.

    LG’s Promising Projections

Today, PC Gamer shared an update after LG released a press statement focused on monitors. The main takeaway is that the company predicts the OLED monitor market will grow from $75 million in 2022 to over $1 billion by 2025. LG isn’t the only player in this field; Samsung and MSI are also seeing success with QD-OLED panels, which offer enhanced brightness. Additionally, some lesser-known Chinese brands are providing more affordable OLED options for budget-conscious consumers.

    Increased Variety for Consumers

With more brands investing in OLED technology, the variety available is good news for shoppers. For instance, Samsung’s 49-inch Odyssey ultrawide OLED monitor provides an immersive experience for gamers or can replace several 16:9 monitors in a workspace. LG is also tapping into the demand for larger screens, recently announcing a 45-inch monitor with a stunning 5K2K resolution (5120×2160). Conversely, MSI has introduced the 27-inch MPG 272URX 4K OLED gaming monitor, which is designed for esports professionals with a top refresh rate of 240 Hz.

    Competitive Prices and Features

As the competition heats up, some OLED monitor prices have dropped to more affordable ranges. Manufacturers are also adding smart features to ease worries about burn-in. Currently, these monitors don’t quite match the brightness of their OLED TV counterparts. However, if LG and other companies manage to increase the brightness of OLED monitors, it could draw in even more customers.
