  • HarmonyOS Overtakes iOS in Market Share for the First Time

HarmonyOS Overtakes iOS in Market Share for the First Time

Huawei’s HarmonyOS operating system has marked a significant achievement in the Chinese market, as per data from Counterpoint Research. In the first quarter of 2024, HarmonyOS overtook Apple’s iOS for the first time, becoming the second-most popular mobile operating system in China.

    Market Share Surge

The report indicates a notable rise in HarmonyOS’s market share, which increased from 8% in Q1 2023 to 17% in Q1 2024. Concurrently, iOS’s share dropped from 20% to 16%.

This marks the first instance since Q1 2019 that iOS has experienced a reduction in market share during the first quarter in China. The decline is partly attributed to the release of new 5G smartphones by Huawei, which pose direct competition to Apple’s offerings.

    Global Expansion

HarmonyOS’s growth extends beyond China. Globally, its market share doubled year-on-year, reaching 4% in Q1 2024. In contrast, both Android and iOS experienced minor drops from 78% and 20% in Q1 2023 to 77% and 19%, respectively.

Despite this, Android saw a month-on-month recovery in Q1 2024, while iOS’s share fell from 23% in Q4 2023 to 19% in Q1 2024. Counterpoint attributes this decline to the seasonal variations typical of iPhone releases.

HarmonyOS is witnessing strong 5G adoption. According to Counterpoint, the adoption rate increased from 9% in Q1 2023 to 50% in the first quarter of this year. The report also indicates that Huawei’s focus on localizing its supply chain is expected to sustain this growth trend.

Counterpoint’s findings are consistent with a forecast report by TechInsights released in January 2024, which predicted that HarmonyOS would surpass iOS to become the second-largest smartphone operating system in China by year-end.

  • Samsung Unveils 2nm, 4nm, 1.4nm Nodes to Boost AI Technology

Samsung Unveils 2nm, 4nm, 1.4nm Nodes to Boost AI Technology

Samsung has recently showcased its newest foundry advancements and shared its vision for the AI era at an event held at their Device Solutions America headquarters in San Jose, California.

    ![Samsung](Image: Samsung)

To compete in the AI industry, Samsung has been focusing on developing future process nodes and has reportedly achieved some milestones. The company is introducing three new process nodes – SF2Z, SF1.4, and SF4U. As inferred from their names, these are Samsung’s most advanced 2nm, 1.4nm, and 4nm process nodes to date. These nodes will be integrated into the Samsung AI Solutions platform.

    GAA Process and Co-Packaged Optics

In addition to the GAA process, which the company claims is ideal for AI accelerators, Samsung plans to introduce integrated, co-packaged optics (CPO) technology aimed at high-speed, low-power data processing. This was revealed by Dr. Siyoung Choi, President and Head of Foundry Business at Samsung Electronics.

    The Latest 2nm Process – SF2Z

Samsung’s latest 2nm process, SF2Z, includes optimized backside power delivery network (BSPDN) technology. The new process places power rails on the backside of the wafer to eliminate bottlenecks between power and signal lines.

Thanks to the BSPDN technology, SF2Z offers better performance compared to SE2, the first-generation 2nm process node. Additionally, SF2Z significantly reduces voltage drop (IR drop), boosting the performance of HPC designs. Samsung mentioned that mass production for the SF2Z process node would begin in 2027.

    New 4nm and 1.4nm Nodes

“SF4U is a high-value 4nm variant that provides PPA improvements by incorporating optical shrink,” noted the company. Mass production for this node is scheduled for 2025.

Furthermore, a 1.4nm node (SF1.4) is also under development, with progress moving “smoothly.” This smallest of the three nodes is also set for mass production by 2027.

  • 80% of Online-Only Smartphone Sales in India Go to Grey Market

80% of Online-Only Smartphone Sales in India Go to Grey Market

A recent report by The Economic Times highlights a worrying trend in India’s online smartphone market: a large percentage of phones sold online are ending up in the grey market. Trade bodies claim that up to 80% of online-exclusive smartphones are being diverted by aggregators who exploit loopholes to purchase them in bulk and resell them at higher prices.

Tax Losses and Counterfeit Risks: The Dark Side of India’s Online Smartphone Market

These aggregators act as wholesalers, using numerous user accounts to circumvent online retailers’ purchase limits and acquire popular models in bulk. This creates artificial stock shortages on e-commerce platforms, frustrating genuine customers. The aggregators then sell these phones to retailers across states at inflated prices, who can further exploit the limited online availability to justify even higher markups.

This diversion results in a dual negative impact. Firstly, it causes government revenue loss due to tax evasion. Aggregators often buy these phones using business accounts, allowing them to claim Input Tax Credit (ITC) on the 18% GST paid. However, when they resell these phones at a higher price through unofficial channels, the additional profit escapes GST taxation. Industry estimates suggest this could be a potential $600 million GST rebate fraud.

    Consumer Vulnerability and Brand Impact

Secondly, consumers are left at risk. By purchasing from unauthorized sellers, they risk receiving counterfeit products or facing warranty issues later on. Additionally, they miss out on exclusive deals and offers often available through authorized online retailers.

Smartphone brands like Poco, OnePlus, iQOO, and Realme are reportedly the most affected by this grey market activity. These brands are taking measures to curb the practice by issuing warnings to retailers and requiring them to sign undertakings promising to sell only through authorized channels. Moreover, some brands are appointing distributors to cater specifically to offline retailers.

    Need for a Multi-Pronged Approach

The smartphone industry requires a multi-faceted approach to tackle this issue. E-commerce platforms need to enhance their systems to detect and prevent bulk purchases using multiple accounts. Additionally, stricter regulations and enforcement are necessary to deter tax evasion practices by aggregators. Finally, consumer awareness campaigns are essential to educate buyers about the risks associated with purchasing from unauthorized sellers.

This is an ongoing story, and it remains to be seen how effectively these measures can reduce grey market activity in India’s online smartphone market.
