  • Mid-Range Smartphones Face Regressions; Users Miss One Feature

Mid-Range Smartphones Face Regressions; Users Miss One Feature

    Key Takeaways

    1. Budget smartphones like the Galaxy A56 and Google Pixel 9a are popular for cost-conscious users but may face performance and camera quality trade-offs.
    2. Upcoming mid-range smartphones might experience compromises due to supply chain issues and rising memory costs.
    3. RAM and internal storage are significant contributors to smartphone material costs, which are expected to rise further by 2026.
    4. Users humorously speculate that older features may return, such as 90 Hz displays and plastic frames, while many welcome the potential return of microSD slots and 3.5 mm headphone jacks.
    5. The timeline for these changes in smartphone designs remains uncertain, as the information is based on leaks and not confirmed developments.

Budget smartphones like the Galaxy A56, which is currently priced at $300 on Amazon, and the Google Pixel 9a present an appealing choice for users who are mindful of their budget and willing to make some trade-offs in terms of performance and camera quality. However, according to a recent leak, those shopping in the mid-range market might soon find themselves facing even more compromises due to ongoing supply chain challenges and increasing memory costs.

    Details from the Leak

This information was shared by the reputable leaker Digital Chat Station on Weibo, and it was also reported by Android Authority. The leaker didn’t provide extensive details but mentioned several older specs that could make a comeback in smartphones categorized under the “3K class.” This likely refers to phones priced around 3,000 yuan, which is about $435. Examples of devices in this range include the Oppo Reno 15, OnePlus Ace 6T, and the Samsung Galaxy A56. The next models in this line might have to make certain trade-offs to manage the rising costs of memory.

    Impact on Smartphone Specs

As per Android Authority, referencing data from Counterpoint Research, RAM constituted around 14% of the total material costs for a smartphone that features 8 GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256 GB of UFS 4.0 storage by the end of the first quarter of 2026. Internal storage contributed an additional 11%. The report indicates that these percentages could increase even more by the second quarter of 2026. Therefore, simply reducing RAM won’t likely be enough to counteract the climbing memory prices. Consequently, choices regarding materials and display specs could also face strain in the future.

    User Reactions and Speculation

Users on Weibo have been humorously suggesting that the current AI boom is causing the industry to regress, reviving outdated features like 90 Hz waterdrop displays and plastic frames. Nevertheless, the potential reintroduction of the microSD slot has been positively received by many. This would simplify the decision to opt for a lower storage option at the time of purchase and allow for greater flexibility with onboard storage. Additionally, numerous users would appreciate the return of the 3.5 mm headphone jack, although it might not provide significant benefits to manufacturers in this context.

At this point, it is still uncertain whether and when these trends will manifest in actual devices. The information available is primarily based on a leak, which means it’s unclear if such changes will appear in the next generation of smartphones, at a later date, or possibly not at all.

  • Razer Blade 16 Launches at GDC 2026: Longer Battery, Faster Graphics

Razer Blade 16 Launches at GDC 2026: Longer Battery, Faster Graphics

    Key Takeaways

    1. The 2026 Blade 16 replaces the AMD Ryzen AI 9 with the Intel Core Ultra 9 296H for improved performance and efficiency.
    2. Expected battery life is up to 60% longer compared to last year’s AMD models without sacrificing performance.
    3. The Intel CPU supports more cores and faster LPDDR5X-9600 memory, enhancing overall system performance.
    4. GPU TGP increases slightly from 160 W to 165 W, benefiting from the CPU’s efficiency improvements within the ultrathin design.
    5. Display brightness has been upgraded by 100 nits to meet TrueBlackHDR1000 standards, and new connectivity options like Thunderbolt 5 and Bluetooth 6 are included.

While the Blade 16 is still relatively new, it’s getting a refresh this year with fresh configurations to enhance the already existing AMD choices. Specifically, the 2026 Blade 16 will replace the Ryzen AI 9 with the Intel Core Ultra 9 296H.

    Performance Enhancements

This simple change in processors is anticipated to yield considerable boosts, particularly because Panther Lake offers improved efficiency. According to Razer, the battery life could be as much as 60 percent longer than the AMD models from last year, all without compromising performance. Moreover, the Intel CPU includes more cores and supports quicker LPDDR5X-9600 memory compared to the AMD Zen 5 version, resulting in better overall performance.

    GPU and Thermal Management

Thanks to the efficiency improvements of the CPU, there’s a slight increase in GPU TGP from 160 W to 165 W. Although this change is minor, it’s certainly a welcome addition considering the tight thermal limitations of the ultrathin Blade 16 design.

In addition to performance upgrades, Razer has also enhanced the display’s maximum brightness by 100 nits to meet TrueBlackHDR1000 standards. Connectivity options like Thunderbolt 5 and Bluetooth 6 are now inherently supported, which were not available on the previous AMD-based models.

The Panther Lake Blade 16 is now up for pre-order, with prices starting at $3000 for the basic RTX 5070 Ti version and going up to $5000 for the top-tier RTX 5090 model. All Intel configurations feature the same Core Ultra 9 CPU and a 240 Hz OLED display, regrettably lacking color choices beyond the standard black.

  • DJI Sues Insta360 for Patent Theft in China’s Drone Market Rivalry

DJI Sues Insta360 for Patent Theft in China’s Drone Market Rivalry

    Key Takeaways

    1. DJI has filed a lawsuit against Insta360 for allegedly using six of its important patents related to drones and cameras.
    2. The lawsuit centers around former DJI employees who joined Insta360 and filed new patents, which DJI claims belong to them under Chinese law.
    3. Insta360’s CEO, JK Liu, denies the allegations, stating that the patents were developed independently and that the company aims to protect its inventors from competitor recruitment.
    4. Liu has accused DJI of copying features from Insta360 products, claiming that DJI’s current offerings may infringe on 28 of Insta360’s patents.
    5. The timing of the lawsuit is strategic as both companies compete in overlapping markets, with Insta360 recently launching a 360-degree drone that pressures DJI’s position.

The competition between two Chinese companies that make cameras and drones has escalated. DJI has officially taken legal action against Insta360 and its parent company, Arashi Vision, filing a lawsuit with the Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court. The claims are serious, as Insta360 is being accused of illegally using six important DJI patents related to flight control, image processing, and hardware design.

    Legal Concerns Over Patent Rights

At the heart of this legal battle are former DJI employees who filed new patents shortly after starting work at Insta360. According to Chinese law, if an employee invents something within a year of leaving a company, and it closely relates to their previous job, those rights belong to the former employer. DJI is now seeking an official transfer of these patent rights.

    CEO’s Denial and Counterclaims

Insta360’s CEO, Liu Jingkang—also known as JK Liu—has firmly rejected the claims on Weibo, asserting that the company’s internal investigations show all ideas mentioned in the lawsuit were developed at Insta360. JK Liu explained that they initially kept the inventors’ names private not because they had anything to hide, but to shield their developers from aggressive recruitment by competitors. He also mentioned that the patents in question have not been used for about five years. For instance, a feature for automatic diving that is brought up in the lawsuit would not be included in any product due to strict aviation regulations.

    Attacking the Competition

Instead of just defending Insta360, JK Liu has taken a direct jab at DJI, alleging that the market leader often copies components and software features. Insta360’s internal research strongly suggests that current DJI cameras, like the Osmo 360, might infringe on 28 of Insta360’s patents. Still, JK Liu does not plan to counter-sue. His smaller company prefers to put its resources into developing new technologies rather than hiring expensive lawyers. Recently in the US, Liu showed that Insta360 could indeed win legal disputes, as the US International Trade Commission (ITC) dismissed all of GoPro’s patent lawsuits against his company.

    Strategic Timing and Market Impact

The timing of this legal hearing is quite strategic. Both tech giants have been stepping into each other’s domains for some time. DJI has been focusing on the profitable 360-degree camera market with products like the Osmo 360, while Insta360 has been working hard to challenge DJI’s stronghold in the drone market. For example, its Antigravity sub-brand introduced the A1 in late 2025, which is the first real 360-degree drone, putting pressure on DJI to respond. DJI’s answer is expected to be unveiled on Thursday, 26 March, in the form of the new Avata 360. This ongoing battle in hardware has already affected the stock market, with Arashi Vision’s share price dropping nearly seven percent after DJI’s complaint was made public.
