Xiaomi has introduced its first-ever network attached storage device through the Chinese crowdfunding platform Youpin. Dubbed the Smart Storage, the new entry is a compact, two-bay NAS designed to blend into a variety of home environments with measurements of 161 mm tall, 200.5 mm wide, and 85 mm thick.
Compact enclosure with high capacity
The unit accommodates both 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch SATA drives. Xiaomi is offering three pre-configured versions, topped by a model that ships with 8 TB drives in each bay for a total of 16 TB. Users can expand the system to a maximum of 60 TB, thanks to support for individual drives up to 30 TB in each slot.
Platform and connectivity
While Xiaomi has not fully detailed the internal hardware, recent leaks point to a Realtek RTD1619B processor, a chip commonly employed in entry-level storage systems. The enclosure includes 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of built-in storage, with active cooling to manage thermals. Physical ports consist of one USB 3.0 Type-A, a 2.5G Ethernet port, and an HDMI output capable of 4K at 30 Hz.
Software, backup, and media playback
The operating system appears to be a proprietary platform, likely incorporating elements of Xiaomi’s HyperOS ecosystem. A multi-platform companion app offers access from iOS, Android, macOS, and Android TV clients. Xiaomi highlights a range of backup capabilities, including full phone backup, WeChat backup, and security camera backup. When connected to a television, the NAS can function as an entertainment hub with support for 4K video playback, HDR10, and wireless screen casting.
Pricing and availability
During its crowdfunding period, the base 4 TB configuration is priced at CNY 2,299 (approximately $338), the 8 TB version at CNY 2,899 (roughly $427), and the 16 TB version at CNY 4,699 (about $691). Details regarding a global launch have not yet been announced, though the company may introduce the Smart Storage beyond China in the future.
