A new browser-based tool offers a novel solution to one of the Steam Controller’s lingering inconveniences: manual charging. Just days after a separate experiment demonstrated how the gamepad’s internal haptic motors could be steered across a desk like a remote-controlled car, a developer has published a working web application that guides the controller straight onto its charging dock.
Automated Docking via Computer Vision
The new tool, called Steam Controller Auto-Charge, taps into a host computer’s webcam to identify both the controller and the charging puck within its field of view. Once the components are detected, the software takes command of the haptic actuators, which are powerful enough not only to propel the gamepad forward but also to execute surprisingly precise directional turns. The system navigates the controller until it reaches the dock, where strong magnets automatically snap the cable into place and align the metal charging contacts correctly.
A Proof of Concept with Practical Ambitions
Onboard demonstration footage shows the process functioning reliably, although the developer notes the implementation is still bare-bones. The underlying principle, however, opens the door to more seamless integration. Future iterations could trigger an automatic docking sequence whenever a user presses a designated shortcut or a dedicated button directly on the Steam Controller—or when the device enters standby mode. Such an approach would guarantee the gamepad is fully charged and ready the moment it is picked up again.
