Development Veteran Proposes Delaying Next-Generation Consoles Until 2030
A former character artist whose credits span major studios including Naughty Dog, Rocksteady, and Respawn Entertainment has called for Sony and Microsoft to postpone their upcoming consoles. Del Walker, who contributed to titles such as Batman: Arkham Knight and The Last of Us Part II Remastered, argues that a premature hardware cycle risks deepening an already difficult period for game studios.
Rising Hardware Costs Meet Industry Fragility
Walker was responding to a report that outlined a concerning upward revision in the estimated price of Sony's future console. Against the backdrop of a global memory shortage, expectations are mounting that Project Helix and the PlayStation 6 could break the $1,000 barrier, a prospect that worries both consumers and developers. Walker warned that introducing such costly systems now “will cause more bloodshed,” noting the wave of studio closures already reshaping the industry.
He stressed that the financial strain on game production has never eased with the arrival of a new console generation. The added complexity, ballooning budgets, and extended development timelines rarely translate into a proportional leap in creative quality, he argued. Walker suggests that development teams often produce their most focused and inventive work when working within tighter technical constraints. Citing fears of further layoffs, he stated his hope that the “PS6 and Xbox Project Helix never steps foot into this decade.”
The Efficiency Argument and Technical Familiarity
The transition to new hardware reliably demands that studios divert significant resources toward modernizing assets and integrating new features. However, this generational shift may prove smoother than past jumps, as both platforms are expected to use mature architectures that ensure backward compatibility with games across PS5, PC, and older Xbox libraries. This familiarity is designed to reduce friction for developers.
Sony and Microsoft maintain that evolving toolchains will allow teams to control costs without sacrificing quality. Both companies are betting that generative AI will reduce workloads across asset creation and testing. Yet artists like Walker remain unconvinced, countering that such tools cannot replicate the nuance of human creative judgment, even if they speed up certain technical tasks.
Market Realities and Manufacturing Pressures
Faced with potential sticker shock, a significant portion of the player base would prefer to see Sony and Microsoft extend the lifecycles of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The debate over whether marginal gains in graphics and performance can justify a massive new investment remains unsettled. For the moment, no official signs indicate that either Project Helix or the PS6 will be delayed.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has acknowledged the storage and memory crunch and committed to leveraging innovation to control the final price of the next Xbox. Sony is also aware of escalating manufacturing challenges, though the company may already be too far along in its investment in the next PlayStation to accommodate a lengthy postponement.
