A custom hardware creator known online as ‘wewillmakeitnow’ has unveiled a second-generation handheld gaming system built from a salvaged PS4 Slim motherboard. The revision arrives as Sony gradually winds down the PS4 lifecycle and develops its next portable device, and it follows the same modder’s earlier DIY PS4 handheld introduced earlier this year.
A leaner design with the same core display
The V2 handheld preserves the 7-inch 1080p OLED panel of its predecessor while adopting a more compact layout. As before, a smaller ESP32-driven display shows real-time system telemetry, and the device supports video output over HDMI for a docked television experience. The tightly trimmed motherboard allows the entire system to fit into a freshly 3D-printed shell, which now incorporates an additional cooling fan sourced from a GTX 750 graphics card. According to the modder, that larger rear fan remains quiet, while most audible noise comes from a smaller 30x30 fan mounted inside.
Battery revisions and power flexibility
The power system has been reworked to use six 21,700-size lithium-ion cells arranged into a 5,000 mAh pack. Although that total represents a 1,000 mAh reduction from the original version, the modder states endurance remains roughly unchanged at 1.5 to 3 hours. One practical upgrade in the V2 is a quickly removable battery setup, which drops the handheld’s weight to approximately 900 grams and allows it to run directly from a wall adapter when stationary.
Niche craftsmanship, not a commercial product
The creator does not intend to sell the design, and the project demands precision cutting of a PS4 Slim mainboard—an operation few users would likely attempt. Still, the result stands as a technically impressive build in the enthusiast modding scene, arriving just as Sony’s last-generation console reaches the end of its mainstream support.
