Bandai Namco and TOSE have announced that a remastered edition of the classic role-playing game Tales of Eternia will launch worldwide on October 16. The title is coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam, as the publisher continues to bring its legacy RPG library to modern platforms.
Digital copies will be sold across all supported systems, while physical editions are confirmed for PlayStation 5, Switch, and Switch 2. The game originally debuted in Japan in 2000 and reached North America a year later under the name Tales of Destiny II, marking a significant 2D milestone in the long-running series.
A World Divided Across the Sky
The story unfolds in Eternia, a world split into two parallel realms—Inferia and Celestia—that face each other across the heavens. Players follow Reid Hershel, a hunter from the quiet village of Rasheans, and his friend Farah Oersted, a skilled martial artist. Their peaceful routine is disrupted when a young girl named Meredy arrives from Celestia in a strange craft, speaking only Melnics, an unfamiliar language. Alongside Keele Zeibel, a scholar from Mintche University, the group uncovers an impending disaster called the Great Fall. To stop the two realms from crashing into one another, they must journey across both worlds to persuade powerful elemental spirits known as Greater Craymels to lend their aid.
Modern Upgrades and Classic Combat
Battles use the series’ trademark Aggressive Linear Motion Battle System, which anchors combat to a 2D side-scrolling plane in real time. Players directly control a party member, stringing together physical Artes, casting Craymel magic, and maneuvering for tactical positioning.
The remaster introduces independent visual and audio toggles, letting users switch between updated HD graphics with clean sound and the original 2000 pixel art paired with retro effects. Practical quality-of-life additions aim to reduce the friction of the original PlayStation era: destination waypoints now appear on maps, random encounters can be adjusted or disabled entirely, and features such as high-speed auto-battles, Quick Recovery, and instant retry prompts keep momentum going after a party defeat. Veteran players can select the Extreme difficulty setting right from the beginning, while completing the main campaign unlocks the even tougher Unknown tier.
Preserving a Classic RPG Era
This release joins other recent efforts by Bandai Namco to make older series entries available on contemporary hardware, addressing long-standing fan demand for preserved access to titles that have been out of print for decades. By offering the remaster on both current platforms and the newly announced Nintendo Switch 2, the publisher extends the game’s reach to a cross-generational audience, pairing faithful retro aesthetics with streamlined play that respects the original while trimming its more tedious edges.
