Upcoming changes to Apple’s Pro-tier iPhone models point to a modest but meaningful shift in physical design and internal capacity, according to newly surfaced details from industry sources and regulatory filings.
A Thicker Chassis and a Return to Aluminum
A prominent Chinese leaker posting under the name Fixed-focus digital cameras on Weibo claims the iPhone 18 Pro will adopt a noticeably thicker aluminum frame and rear camera housing compared to the iPhone 17 Pro. Apple is expected to retain the aluminum alloy mid-frame introduced with the previous generation, stepping away from any immediate return to titanium.
The leaker estimates the device’s thickness will fall between 9.9mm and 10.9mm, a meaningful increase over the 8.75mm measurement of the iPhone 17 Pro. The source described the final figure as one that may be “somewhat surprising.”
A More Capable Main Camera System
Much of the added bulk is being attributed to a re-engineered primary camera module. Apple is reportedly preparing to introduce its first variable aperture lens for the iPhone, a component said to carry a 50 percent higher cost than the fixed-aperture lens used in current models. Production of the new module is reportedly scaling up at suppliers LG Innotek and Sunny Optical.
Battery Gains Across the Pro Lineup
Separate certification data from China’s 3C authority, shared by the leaker Digital Chat Station, confirms that both iPhone 18 Pro models will see battery capacity increases. The SIM-card version of the iPhone 18 Pro is listed with a 4,056mAh battery — a 1.71 percent rise from the 3,988mAh cell in the iPhone 17 Pro — while the eSIM-only variant sold in the US climbs from 4,252mAh to 4,288mAh, a 0.85 percent increase.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max shows a more substantial leap. Its SIM-card model moves to a 5,391mAh battery, up from the 4,823mAh unit in the iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the US eSIM-only version rises from 5,088mAh to 5,567mAh. Apple does not publish raw battery capacities in its official materials, relying instead on runtime estimates; precise figures are typically verified through teardowns after launch.
The iPhone 18 series is widely anticipated to debut at Apple’s customary September event and could arrive alongside the company’s first foldable iPhone, adding a new dimension to the premium smartphone segment.
