Samsung’s next-generation foldable flagship could finally erase one of the longest-standing hardware compromises in its Ultra lineup. A new prediction circulating in South Korean tech circles suggests the Galaxy Z Fold9 Ultra will adopt a rear camera system virtually identical to the one planned for the Galaxy S27 Ultra, giving the book-style foldable the same photographic foundation as the company’s premier slab phone for the first time.
A generational leap in zoom and resolution
The current Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra already marks a notable step forward with its 200MP HP2 wide sensor, a 10MP 3x telephoto lens, and a new 50MP ultrawide unit that it shares with the standard Galaxy Z Fold8. According to a post on the enthusiast platform meeco.kr by user 흡혈귀왕 (Vampire King), the Fold9 Ultra could move to a 200MP HP6 wide sensor paired with a 50MP IMX854 5x periscope telephoto lens. That shift would represent a dramatic upgrade in the zoom camera’s resolution and optical reach.
Alignment with the Galaxy S27 Ultra roadmap
The projected specifications closely mirror Samsung’s own anticipated direction for the Galaxy S27 Ultra, which is expected to feature a new 200MP primary sensor — widely identified as the ISOCELL HP6 — while retiring the dedicated 3x telephoto in favor of a 5x periscope zoom with 10x in-sensor crop capability. If the prediction proves accurate, the Fold9 Ultra would inherit this identical wide-and-telephoto arrangement, closing a persistent gap between the camera hardware of Samsung’s foldable and conventional Ultra devices.
The same source also highlights a generational split between the base models. The standard Galaxy Z Fold8 uses a 50MP 1.0μm GNG wide sensor, which limits lossless zoom to roughly 2x. Had Samsung equipped that device with the 200MP HP2 sensor found in the Fold8 Ultra, the next-generation Fold9 could have combined a 200MP HP6 wide sensor with in-sensor cropping to reach up to 3x zoom. Because the base Fold8 retained the lower-resolution sensor, it is now firmly positioned in a tier below the Fold8 Ultra. This product segregation likely means the standard Fold9 will not match the zoom flexibility of its Ultra siblings either.
