Bethesda Softworks and id Software have officially announced the first major story expansion for DOOM: The Dark Ages. The DLC, called “Revelations,” is scheduled to launch simultaneously on July 7, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
Campaign Scale and Technical Rollout
The expansion delivers a single-player campaign estimated at 10 to 12 hours, with roughly 60 percent devoted to core narrative progression and 40 percent structured as endgame content. According to the developer, this makes the package larger than both of DOOM Eternal’s post-launch expansions combined. The release will be available across all digital storefronts at the same time, with PC users accessing it via Steam, and console players through the PlayStation Store and Xbox Marketplace. Pre-loading will be supported, and a day-one patch will introduce targeted performance optimizations for high-intensity combat, including newly added support for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) to produce sharper image quality on the PlayStation 5 Pro.
New Combat Mechanics and Level Design
At the center of the expansion is the Chain Spear, a versatile weapon built to reshape the grounded combat of the base game by adding rapid mobility loops. The spear tip fires outward on a physical chain, functioning as a grappling hook that pulls the Slayer toward enemies or propels him through environments. It integrates specific dash mechanics and operates on an independent upgrade tree, where players spend harvested resources to unlock status effects and attributes. The DLC is structured across six levels connected by an interconnected hub called Purgatory. Built with a Metroidvania-style layout, the hub requires players to backtrack through zones to solve puzzles, locate hidden secrets, and unlock new paths as abilities improve. Players can also access modernized, fully playable versions of classic DOOM 2 maps, presented as the Slayer’s memories. The enemy roster expands with mechanical jousting variants named Buzzsaws and the return of the Archvile, rebalanced to summon fresh waves of demons instead of resurrecting fallen targets. Balancing the spear with the signature shield from the base game remains essential for surviving these tougher encounters.
Pricing, Premium Access, and Free Update
Bethesda has set the standalone price for Revelations at USD 19.99 for standard edition owners. A comprehensive Premium Edition upgrade is available for USD 34.99, while owners of the Premium Edition and Collector’s Bundle receive automatic day-one access. Alongside the paid release, id Software is also deploying the Ripatorium 3.0 system update as a free patch for all players. This update expands customization tools, adds localized preset options, and revises the passcode framework for the arena challenge mode. Completing the campaign unlocks three exclusive Ripatorium maps, unaligned demon archetypes, and pre-upgraded weapon arrays, giving players additional reasons to revisit the mode after the credits roll.
