NIS America and Nippon Ichi Software have confirmed that the long-running Disgaea series will take an unexpected detour into real-time combat with Disgaea Mayhem. The global release is scheduled for July 23, 2026, and the game will be available on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam.
A Mercenary on an Unusual Mission
The story centers on N.A., a seasoned mercenary driven by a simple desire for payment and an unusually powerful sweet tooth. His services are engaged by Overlord Tichelle in the Superlative Netherworld after a crisis disrupts the realm. An irreplaceable confection called the First Radiance Pudding, crafted by the overlord’s late father, has been stolen. Tichelle tasks the protagonist with hunting down the culprit across a series of hazardous Netherworld locales and reclaiming the sentimental dessert.
Rebuilt Combat Without Sacrificing RPG Depth
Where the franchise spent over two decades refining grid-based, turn-based tactics, Disgaea Mayhem adopts a high-speed action RPG format inspired by Musou-style hack-and-slash encounters. Combat is driven by direct button inputs rather than menus, and players can switch between seven weapon classes—swords, fists, axes, spears, handguns, and bows—to clear waves of enemies or concentrate damage on single targets.
Despite the shift in gameplay style, the core RPG architecture remains intact. Level caps stay at the series’ signature 9,999, and stacked character stats can still generate single-hit damage values reaching one million. Long-term progression continues to depend on unit reincarnation to refine base attributes and extensive equipment optimization inside the Item World.
Familiar Systems in a New Setting
Several hallmark mechanics return to complement the updated engine. Players can recruit classic Netherworld demons such as Prinnies, transform allies into active weaponry through the Magichange system, and influence gameplay rules by submitting bills at the newly named Dark Chocolate Assembly. A free demo featuring three stages and access to all seven weapon classes is available now across Steam, PlayStation 5, and the Nintendo eShop for both Switch and Switch 2, letting players test the combat model before launch.
