Apple’s long-rumored entry into the foldable smartphone market has gained fresh support from within the company’s own software. An examination of the latest iOS 27 beta has revealed updated battery-status language that strongly points toward a device with more than one battery — a design hallmark of book-style foldables.

Plural language surfaces in iOS 27 beta

Two lines within the System Settings battery section now read: “The batteries in this iPhone are performing as expected” and “The health of the batteries in this iPhone has significantly degraded.” In every prior iPhone generation, these messages have appeared exclusively in the singular form, reflecting the single-cell design Apple has used since the original model. The shift to the plural “batteries” aligns with persistent reports that the forthcoming foldable, widely referred to as the iPhone Ultra, will house a separate battery in each half of its chassis — an approach already common among competing foldable devices.

Battery capacities and comparative gains

Current supply-chain rumors attribute a 1,921 mAh cell to one side of the device and a 2,962 mAh cell to the other, yielding a combined capacity of 4,883 mAh. That figure would be 483 mAh, or roughly 11 percent, larger than the 4,400 mAh battery found in the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7, despite the iPhone Ultra’s more compact architecture. The increase suggests Apple is prioritizing endurance to offset the power demands of a folding 7.76-inch main display, which is expected to be accompanied by a 5.49-inch cover screen.

Expected launch and camera system

The iPhone Ultra is widely anticipated to debut at Apple’s annual September event, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a next-generation Apple Watch. In a departure from the triple-camera arrangement found on the Pro models, the foldable is said to feature a dual rear setup consisting of a 48 MP main camera and a 48 MP ultra-wide-angle camera, omitting a dedicated telephoto lens. If these specifications hold, Apple will be leaning heavily on sensor resolution and computational processing rather than optical zoom to round out the imaging capabilities of its first foldable handset.
