OpenAI is quietly shaping an ambitious new device category that could redefine the smart speaker when it arrives. Following initial rumors in February, fresh details now point to a launch expected in 2027, with pricing likely to fall between $200 and $300. According to new reporting, the company’s approach differs markedly from established products like the Amazon Echo Studio.

A More Expressive, Aware Design

The speaker is said to incorporate motorized moving parts that help it feel “more alive” during interactions. A built-in camera and additional sensors allow the device to perceive its environment. Combined with a rechargeable battery and a portable form factor, the unit is being designed to move easily from room to room, adapting to different spaces throughout the day.

Deep Personalization Through ChatGPT

At the core of the experience is a voice assistant built on ChatGPT, engineered to offer a level of personalization that goes well beyond current assistants such as Amazon Alexa. Over time, the speaker learns about its user, potentially drawing on personal data including emails to tailor responses and anticipate needs. Alongside standard smart speaker functions—such as music playback and smart home control—this creates a more individually attuned interaction model.

Design and Talent from Apple

The product’s development is being guided with the support of Jonathan Ive, Apple’s former head of design, and draws on the expertise of more than 400 engineers that OpenAI has recruited from Apple. That wave of hiring has already triggered a legal response from Apple, which has filed a lawsuit over the departures. The convergence of this design and engineering talent signals how seriously OpenAI views the hardware category as a future anchor for its AI ambitions.
