Samsung Display is reportedly gearing up to supply next-generation OLED panels for Apple’s anticipated MacBook Ultra, a product rumored to launch between late 2026 and early 2027. Industry sources indicate that the Korean display maker has already begun preparations for mass production and is positioned as Apple’s exclusive screen supplier for this flagship notebook through at least 2029. LG Display, a long-time rival in the Apple supply chain, is said to need several years to establish comparable high-volume manufacturing capabilities.
Laying the manufacturing groundwork
Production of the advanced tandem OLED panels is planned for Samsung’s Gen 8.6 factory in South Korea. Apple has reportedly placed an initial order for approximately 2.5 million display units, though that figure will likely be revised based on market demand after the product launches. Panel mass production is expected to commence in August ahead of the notebook’s eventual assembly and release. The MacBook Ultra is anticipated to arrive in both 14-inch and 16-inch screen sizes.
Display performance preview
Final specifications for the MacBook Ultra’s screen remain unconfirmed, but Samsung Display recently demonstrated a panel that aligns closely with Apple’s requirements. A similar tandem OLED technology is already shipping in the Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i Aura Edition, delivering a peak HDR brightness of 1,600 nits, which matches the current MacBook Pro’s Mini-LED display. Samsung also highlights a full-screen sustained brightness of 1,000 nits, a 120 Hz refresh rate, and near-total coverage of the DCI-P3 and Adobe RGB color spaces, suggesting the MacBook Ultra could offer a substantial visual upgrade while maintaining competitive brightness levels.
