Meta is putting a lot of investment into building physical infrastructure, revealing plans for a number of “multi-gigawatt clusters” that are much larger than its current server farms. Analysts see this endeavor as a long-term investment in gaining a lead in AI computing. A single gigawatt-class cluster could surpass three billion tera-FLOPS, providing Meta with more processing power per researcher than any other lab. However, achieving this advantage will depend on perfect execution in power delivery, supply chains, and model development—and it will require patience, as profits may not come until after the hardware is fully operational.
