Xiaomi is said to be developing the Xiaomi 15 series of smartphones specifically for the Chinese market. In October 2023, the Xiaomi 14 and 14 Pro were introduced as the first phones featuring the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. It is anticipated that the Xiaomi 15 lineup will make its debut around the same period this year. A recent leak from Digital Chat Station has disclosed crucial details regarding the fingerprint sensor in the 15 series.
Xiaomi 15 Series and Ultrasonic In-Screen Fingerprint Scanner
The forthcoming Xiaomi 15 series is expected to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 mobile platform. According to the leak by DCS, the entire 15 series, which could include models like the Xiaomi 15, 15 Pro, and 15 Ultra, is currently undergoing trials with Goodix single-point ultrasonic fingerprint recognition technology. This marks a departure from the optical fingerprint technology seen in the Xiaomi 14 series.
Ultrasonic fingerprint recognition operates by emitting ultrasonic waves from beneath the display when pressure is applied by a finger. These waves interact with the distinct patterns of ridges and valleys on the fingerprint. Through analyzing the duration and intensity of these echoes, the scanner generates an accurate 3D fingerprint image, ensuring precise and secure authentication.
Advantages of Ultrasonic Fingerprint Technology
Ultrasonic fingerprint technology boasts several advantages over optical fingerprint recognition. These include better penetration, water and smudge resistance, increased accuracy, live finger detection support, and enhanced security measures.
DCS noted that it is still early to confirm the inclusion of an ultrasonic in-screen fingerprint scanner in the Xiaomi 15 series. He mentioned that the hardware New Product Introduction (NPI) phase for the 15 series is set to kick off in April, potentially revealing more concrete information.
Compared to other high-end phones, the Xiaomi 14 features a smaller 6.36-inch display. The Xiaomi 15 is expected to maintain its status as a compact flagship model. The leak by DCS also hints that rival brands might also introduce similarly sized smartphones in the Chinese market.
