The Google Pixel Stand and Pixel Stand 2 serve as excellent wireless chargers for many Pixel users, except for those who have the latest Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Google has now provided a diagram explaining why the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is incompatible with these chargers.
The wireless charging coil inside the Pixel 9 Pro Fold isn’t precisely centered, unlike most other phones that support wireless charging, including previous Pixel models. As depicted in the image below, this misalignment is the primary issue.
Charging Coil Alignment Issues
Google's wireless charging method uses a stand, unlike a pad where you can freely adjust the phone's position. This design makes it impossible to align the Pixel 9 Pro Fold's charging coil properly, hence why it doesn’t charge with the Pixel Stand or Pixel Stand 2.
Compatibility with Other Chargers
Despite this, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is compatible with many other wireless chargers on the market. Google advises users to adjust their phone's position on alternative chargers to ensure proper charging. To verify alignment, users are encouraged to check their phone's charging indicator.
Design Changes and User Concerns
The repositioning of the wireless charging coil might be due to an updated camera placement in the Pixel 9 Pro Fold compared to its predecessor. Regardless of the reason, it’s unfortunate that Google didn’t maintain the coil's position to ensure compatibility with the Pixel Stand 2. This oversight forces Pixel 9 Pro Fold users, who already own a Pixel Stand, to purchase a different wireless charger for their new device.
We hope Google resolves this alignment issue in future iterations of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
