Google Ultra HDR Coming to OnePlus 12 & OPPO Find X7 Ultra

With the latest update, OPPO Find X7 Ultra now includes support for Google’s Ultra HDR format for Android, which is expected to revolutionize mobile photography.

    Ultra HDR Format

Ultra HDR photos are saved in the .jpg format to ensure compatibility with displays that do not support HDR, allowing SDR images to be viewed on older devices. On HDR-supported displays, the HDR image will be shown. With Android’s native HDR support, HDR photos no longer need to be rendered in SDR, providing brighter highlights and darker shadows, similar to real life. The Ultra HDR format incorporates both the SDR image and the HDR Gain Map in its metadata.

A recent update for the OPPO Find X7 Ultra, version number PHY110_14.0.1.628(CN01) and sized at 946.26 MB, introduces support for Ultra HDR. This update empowers the OPPO Find X7 Ultra to capture stunning Ultra HDR images in automatic, portrait, and night modes, with resolutions of either 12MP or 25MP. Additionally, OnePlus 12 users will also benefit from this update, as it has been extended to OPPO’s sub-brand, OnePlus.

Bad News: S23 Users Won’t Get Ultra HDR Across Lineup

Google has introduced the innovative Ultra HDR technology alongside Android 14, a significant advancement for mobile photography. While some Android phone manufacturers have faced delays in implementing the Ultra HDR feature, the Samsung S24 Ultra stands out with its "Super HDR" feature.

    Super HDR Exclusivity

The Galaxy S23 series will not feature the Super HDR technology, which Samsung introduced in collaboration with Google's Ultra HDR format. Initially available to Galaxy S24 users, Super HDR offers not only enhanced high dynamic range color viewing in photos but also improves colors in videos through unique proprietary algorithms.

    Ultra HDR Advantages

The S24 Ultra showcases Google's Ultra HDR image format, which is saved in .jpg format. When viewed on an HDR screen, the image exhibits high dynamic range qualities, while on an SDR screen, the base image is displayed. An Ultra HDR image consists of a base image and an HDR gain map, ensuring that bright areas in the image appear vividly bright, while the base image is shown on SDR displays.

With the release of the One UI 6.1 update for the S23 series, Samsung extended the AI features found in the S24 series to the S23 line. However, the Super HDR feature will not be available to S23 users, meaning they will miss out on Samsung's exclusive image viewing algorithms for Super HDR.

Google Introduces Ultra HDR Image Sharing for RCS Chats on Messages App

Google has discreetly integrated functionality for sharing Ultra HDR images in RCS chats on its Messages app. This enhancement permits users with compatible devices to share and view Ultra HDR photos seamlessly within the messaging platform.

    Understanding Ultra HDR

The Ultra HDR image format is designed to work with Android 14 and enhances the traditional JPEG format by embedding supplementary HDR metadata. Consequently, while the image can be displayed on any device, devices equipped with HDR-capable screens can fully appreciate the expanded spectrum of colors and tones.

    Uncovering the Feature

The initial sighting of this feature was made by TheSpAndroid, who observed the inclusion of Ultra HDR image support in September, just preceding the release of the Pixel 8 series. This observation was authenticated through the presence of the "bugle.support_ultra_hdr" indicator in the APK.

    Preserving Ultra HDR Fidelity

As reported by the GizNewsDaily blog, Google Messages safeguards the HDR gain map within Ultra HDR images. Consequently, when a sent image is archived, it ought to maintain its Ultra HDR integrity in Google Photos.

    Automatic Rendering of HDR Metadata

Theoretically, when an Ultra HDR image is transmitted or received in a Google Messages RCS chat, the image should automatically exhibit the applied HDR metadata, provided that the device possesses an HDR-compatible screen.

    Distinguishing Ultra HDR Images

Nonetheless, at present, there exists no method to differentiate an Ultra HDR image from a regular HDR image within Google Messages. Consequently, users will encounter difficulty in discerning between standard HDR and Ultra HDR images.

    Phased Deployment

Google has not issued an official declaration concerning the rollout of Ultra HDR support in Google Messages. Nonetheless, it is anticipated that this feature will progressively become available to all Android 14 devices over the forthcoming weeks.
