Huawei Mate 70 Leak: New Design & Elliptical Camera Island Revealed

Earlier this month, Huawei introduced the Huawei Mate XT, marking it as the first-ever tri-foldable smartphone in the world. A recent leak from tipster Digital Chat Station indicates that the company plans to announce the Nova 13 smartphone series in October. Additionally, he mentioned that the launch of the Mate 70 flagship series and the Mate X6 foldable phone is tentatively scheduled for November. The tipster has also shared some expected design changes for the much-anticipated Mate 70 series in a recent post on Weibo.

Design Changes for the Mate 70 Series

The screenshot shared by DCS does not reveal the name of the phone maker involved in the leak, but the details hint that it pertains to the Mate 70 series. The engineering prototype of the Mate 70 is said to feature a centrally placed 3D facial recognition system on a quad-curved display. Both the standard and Pro variants are expected to have a sizeable metal flat-edge frame and a fingerprint sensor integrated into the power button. This information contradicts earlier leaks that suggested the Mate 70 would come with an ultrasonic in-screen fingerprint sensor.

The back of the device is reported to have a centrally positioned elliptical camera island featuring a single periscope lens. For reference, the Mate 60 series utilized a unique "splicing scheme" that combined metal and glass on its back. However, the latest leak suggests that Huawei might opt for an all-glass back for the Mate 70 series.

    Enhanced Efficiency and Software Updates

The tipster has also speculated that the new processor powering the Mate 70 series will offer improved energy efficiency, which might explain why the series could require less heat dissipation material. He noted that the details shared are based on the prototype, so the final production model may differ.

In a previous announcement, Richard Yu, a senior executive at Huawei, stated that the Mate 70 series will officially launch Harmony NEXT in the fourth quarter. This new operating system is expected to boost device performance by 30%, increase connection speeds threefold, and reduce power consumption by 20%.

Huawei Tri-Fold Phone Leaked: Camera Revealed, September Launch

Earlier this month, Huawei’s Consumer Business Group CEO, Yu Richard, was seen with the anticipated tri-foldable phone, offering a sneak peek at its expansive internal display. Recently, Yu Richard has been spotted again with the tri-foldable device, this time showcasing it in its folded form. Reputable source Digital Chat Station suggests that this phone will be launched alongside various other Huawei products in September.

Huawei’s Tri-Foldable Phone Seen Once More

The device’s tri-foldable design makes it appear thicker than standard flat-screen smartphones, yet it’s not excessively bulky. When unfolded, the thickness is anticipated to be around 5mm, and approximately 15mm when folded. The rear camera is designed with a circular, centered module, similar to the Mate 50 series, and is surrounded by Paris studs.

Huawei Tri-Fold Phone Leaked: Camera Revealed, September Launch

Earlier leaks have suggested that the phone includes an inward folding, outward folding, and dual-hinge configuration. The screen is projected to be about 10 inches, featuring a centrally located hole-punch camera on the far left. It will be powered by the Kirin 9 series platform and is expected to launch ahead of the Mate 70, which is likely to be released in the last quarter of this year.

    Upcoming Launch Events

Per Digital Chat Station, Huawei might host a significant event in September in China. Alongside the introduction of the world’s first tri-foldable phone, the company could also unveil other products, such as the Nova 13 series and the Huawei Watch GT 5 series, which may include an Extraordinary Master Edition variant.

Currently, the official marketing name for Huawei’s tri-foldable phone is unclear. It remains to be seen if it will be introduced as part of the Mate series.

TCL Unveils World’s First Tri-Foldable Phone at SID 2024

TCL CSOT (TCL China Star Optoelectronics Technology) has introduced the world’s first operational tri-foldable phone at the Society for Information Display (SID) 2024 exhibition. This comes five years after they presented a non-functional prototype of a similar design in 2019.

The tri-foldable phone boasts a “Free-type” display that unfolds into a 7.85-inch screen, offering a tablet-like experience when fully opened. When laid flat, the screen maintains a typical tablet aspect ratio and features a unique folding mechanism that supports both “G” and “Z” shaped configurations.

    Slim Design and Advanced Features

One of the main challenges with previous tri-foldable phones has been excessive thickness. TCL seems to have tackled this issue effectively, with their model being just 427 microns thick.

The phone also incorporates a Sensor Under Panel (SUP) design, enabling 3D facial recognition through sensors placed beneath the display. This technology supports mobile payments and device unlocking.

    Consistent Visual Experience

Both the regular display area and the SUP region offer a consistent pixel density of 420PPI, ensuring a uniform visual experience.

The panel includes modern tech such as LTPO technology, allowing the device to adjust its refresh rate between 1Hz and 120Hz while maintaining low power consumption. Durability is another key focus, with TCL asserting that the display is built to last.

    Future Prospects

TCL has not yet disclosed any plans for the commercial release of this tri-foldable phone. It’s also noteworthy that major companies like Huawei are rumored to be developing similar devices, with whispers of Huawei potentially launching a tri-fold phone featuring a 10-inch display later this year.
