Modified Sony PS5 Gaming Laptop Launches Semi-Officially

Modders have transformed consoles into various systems, including creating devices akin to gaming handhelds. However, PenBar has unveiled something that is more polished than what many modders have attempted: a gaming laptop based on the Sony PS5.

    Introducing the BBook

PenBar has named its creation the BBook, and to enhance the gaming laptop experience, they made several custom changes to the hardware layout. Notably, there’s an innovative cooling system, and it seems they’ve included a custom PCB, likely designed for power management.

    Power and Display Features

Unlike standard gaming laptops, the BBook does not have a battery. This means that the PS5 laptop needs to be plugged into a power source to function, but it does come with a display. PenBar has equipped it with a 17.3-inch IPS panel that boasts 100% DCI-P3 color accuracy, a refresh rate of 60Hz, and a 4K resolution.

    Limitations and Connectivity

The BBook includes a keyboard and touchpad, but PenBar notes that these input methods are not usable while gaming, even though many PS5 titles support keyboard and mouse gameplay. The modified design of the PS5 hardware has resulted in the loss of some original ports; specifically, the device only has one USB-A and one HDMI port available. However, there is an option for an expansion module that provides an additional 10Gbps USB-C port. Another limitation is in SSD compatibility: the BBook can only accommodate a 2242 SSD, rather than the typical 2280 SSD (currently, a 1 TB Samsung 990 Evo sells for $69.99 on Amazon).

    Pricing Details

As for the cost, the BBook PS5 laptop is priced at CNY 19,999, which translates to about $2,748. This is quite steep compared to the price of the original console, but it offers a functional screen, keyboard, and touchpad all within a laptop-like design.

  • PlayStation Portal Launches in India: Remote Play Console at Rs 18,990

PlayStation Portal Launches in India: Remote Play Console at Rs 18,990

Sony introduced the PlayStation Portal last year as a Remote Player for its PlayStation 5 gaming console. The company has now launched this handheld device in the Indian market. The PlayStation Portal allows you to play PS5 games using your home Wi-Fi and aims to deliver a console-level experience in a portable design.

    Sony PlayStation Portal Specifications

The handheld device resembles a DualSense controller with an 8-inch LCD screen attached. It can connect to a PlayStation 5 effortlessly and remotely power on the console with a single button press. Users can then enjoy their favorite games on this device with minimal lag. The PlayStation Portal connects to your home Wi-Fi, enabling console gaming without the need for a TV.

    PlayStation Portal Features

The display boasts a Full HD resolution and a 60Hz refresh rate. It supports both PS5 and PS4 games (as long as they are running on a PS5). However, the Portal does not support VR-specific games, games requiring additional peripherals, or PS Plus Premium streamed games. Similar to the standard DualSense Wireless controller, the handheld features haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. Note that your PS5 must be powered on or in Rest Mode to pair with the Remote Player.

    Pricing and Availability

Sony’s PlayStation Portal Remote Player is priced at 18,990 INR (approximately 227 US Dollars). It will be available for purchase starting from 3rd August 2024. You can buy this device from Sony Centers, Flipkart, Amazon, Vijay Sales, Reliance, Croma, BlinkIt, and other partnered retailers.

Last year, I wrote an article about the PlayStation Portal, diving deeper into this handheld. Some features were unclear, and I hoped for PlayStation Plus support on this device, but that does not appear to be the case.
