  • Timex Mini Ring Watch: A Modern Twist on Classic 80s Style

Timex Mini Ring Watch: A Modern Twist on Classic 80s Style

Wearable technology is a captivating field. Today, smart rings are competing closely with smartwatches, which have pushed digital watches into the realm of ‘retro-tech’. Digital watches, in their prime, had a similar fate for mechanical watches. Nevertheless, each of these gadgets has its loyal base of supporters. When it comes to wearable items, aesthetics do not always align with practicality, and emotional attachment can outweigh both.

    Timex’s Innovative Approach

Timex is aware of this dynamic. Ignoring the usual patterns and timelines of technology and style, the renowned watchmaker has launched a distinctive product: a ring watch inspired by its classic T80 digital watch. Created in collaboration with the French fashion house Maison Margiela, the T80 ring watch is a nearly exact miniature of the original digital watch that debuted in 1974, just much smaller.

The polished stainless steel casing measures only 20 mm in width (compared to the original T80’s 34 mm), has a thickness of 7 mm, and features a 12 mm strap width at the lugs. Notably, the ring watch simplifies sizing compared to modern smart rings like the Oura Ring 4, which offers multiple sizes and complex sizing kits. Similar to the T80 watch, this model comes with an expansion band crafted from brushed stainless steel links. It is available in two sizes—S/M and M/L—which can accommodate a variety of finger sizes while being convenient to wear or take off.

    Features and Design

Interestingly, smart rings are also experimenting with their own (more complex) version of an expansion band, as a recent patent application from Xiaomi shows. However, fans of Timex watches might be disappointed to find that the brand’s beloved Indiglo backlight is absent in this model. Furthermore, there are no additional features such as a stopwatch, countdown timer, or alarm; it simply shows the time (in hours and minutes) and the date, with two buttons to adjust settings or switch between the two.

In terms of appearance, the ring watch is truly eye-catching. The shiny case contrasts beautifully with the brushed band, and the numeral-rich design on the dial pays homage to the MM6 fashion label. The face is protected by basic mineral glass, and it offers water resistance up to 30 meters, which is sufficient for handwashing but not suitable for swimming.

    Pricing Concerns

Sadly, whether due to its downsized design or the collaboration with a high-end fashion brand, the T80 ring watch comes with a hefty price tag for what it brings to the table. Retailing at $180, it is several times more expensive than a full-sized T80 watch (currently priced at $46 on Amazon). For that amount, you could also purchase a rugged, stylish, and feature-rich G-Shock (a brand with an equally rich history), such as the sporty GBX-100TT-8JF, the field-watch-inspired GM-2100CB-3AJF, or the much-loved, made-in-Japan GW-5000U-1JF, which features a DLC-coated steel case.

Samsung Galaxy Ring Release: The Wait Is Over

Since then, numerous details about the Samsung Galaxy Ring have surfaced through both official confirmations and various leaks and rumors. This innovative wearable from the South Korean tech giant is poised to make a significant impact on the smart rings market. Today, the anticipation ends as the Galaxy Ring makes its official debut at the Unpacked event, sharing the spotlight with the Z Fold 6, Z Flip 6, and Watch 7 series.

Samsung Galaxy Ring Specifications and Features

The Samsung Galaxy Ring features a titanium grade 5 finish and a distinctive concave design, with its sides tapering toward the center. It boasts an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, and it's waterproof up to 100 meters, making it ideal for swimming. This lightweight device has its smallest variant measuring 7.0 x 2.6mm and weighing just 2.3 grams. Available in nine sizes from size 5 to 13, Samsung provides a free sizing kit with each order to ensure the perfect fit before finalizing the purchase.

In terms of health and fitness, the Samsung Galaxy Ring is outfitted with an optical heart-rate PPG sensor that delivers crucial data like abnormal heart rates in real-time, along with metrics such as beats per minute and respiratory rate. It also includes a skin temperature sensor and menstrual cycle tracking for precise measurement results. The smart ring can track sleep patterns, offering features like snoring analysis, movement during sleep, and sleep latency. It supports various exercise activities and can automatically detect some workout modes. Users will receive alerts when they have been inactive for extended periods. Another standout feature is the AI-enabled Energy Score, which evaluates your physical and mental state based on multiple sleep parameters.

    Enhanced Usability and Battery Life

The Samsung Galaxy Ring includes a gesture feature, allowing users to control their smartphone’s camera shutter or dismiss alarms with a double pinch, similar to the Apple Watch's double tap. It is compatible with Samsung Find and has built-in LED lights that flash when the device is misplaced. The wearable is designed to last up to 7 days on a single charge. It comes with a transparent charging case equipped with LED lights to indicate its status.

  • Oura Launches Symptom Radar Feature to Compete with Galaxy Ring

Oura Launches Symptom Radar Feature to Compete with Galaxy Ring

Smart rings are poised to become a popular consumer technology trend in the coming days, with Oura being a prominent player in the market. Anticipated to launch in the latter part of the year, the Samsung Galaxy Ring has already piqued the interest of tech enthusiasts. In a recent development, Oura has revealed plans to introduce new experimental features to enhance its smart rings.

    Oura Rings' Experimental Features

Oura has unveiled a new Lab section within its app, offering users the opportunity to engage with experimental features. Currently available exclusively on iOS, this section allows users to test these new features and provide valuable feedback. The initial feature, Symptom Radar, is the focus of this experimental phase.

    Symptom Radar Functionality

Symptom Radar is designed to detect indicators of physiological stress by monitoring various biometric signals, including body temperature range, respiratory rate, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability. Upon detecting significant changes in these metrics, users will receive alerts prompting them to either activate Rest mode or reduce their daily activity levels. Notifications regarding symptom variations will be displayed under the Readiness Score. Oura emphasizes that while Rest mode prompts are general, Symptom Radar alerts are more detailed and specific in nature.

    Important Considerations

Although Symptom Radar offers valuable insights into physiological changes, Oura emphasizes that it should not be used as a diagnostic tool or for medical guidance. The company acknowledges that user feedback will play a crucial role in shaping the future of this feature, potentially leading to modifications or removal from the Oura Lab platform.
