    Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition Unboxing Video Review

    The Galaxy Z Fold6 continues to be Samsung’s response to sleeker foldables like the Honor Magic V3, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, and the OnePlus Open (currently priced at $1499.99 on Amazon). Yet, the company has introduced a notably thinner version in its domestic market and China, known as the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition and Samsung W25, respectively.

    Limited Global Availability

    Sadly, it looks like these models won’t be available worldwide, at least not officially. However, Jeff Springer from SammyGuru has gotten his hands on one. Even better, he has already posted what seems to be the very first English unboxing video of the device, which we’ve included below.

    Design Insights

    As shown in the images above, the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition appears to be slimmer than its 12% reduction indicates when stacked against the Galaxy Z Fold6. This Special Edition is also taller and wider compared to its foldable sibling, while still offering a more comfortable grip than the Galaxy S24 Ultra. Additionally, Springer gives us an up-close view of the Special Edition’s crease, which is significantly less prominent than the one that characterizes the Galaxy Z Fold6.

    Enhanced Usability

    Moreover, the Special Edition seems to feature a more functional cover display, thanks to an additional 4.7 mm width when it’s folded. Ultimately, the software experience will be quite familiar to anyone who has used a recent Galaxy Z Fold model. Incidentally, it’s still possible to import a Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition, although it comes at a pretty steep price for now.

    It appears that Samsung has begun sending out Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition units to those who ordered the device during its initial pre-order phase. To summarize, this latest foldable device was launched in South Korea less than a month ago and quickly rebranded as the Samsung W25 for the Chinese market soon afterward.

    Design and Hardware Enhancements

    At first glance, the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition resembles the Galaxy Z Fold6 (current price: $1,299.99 – renewed on Amazon). Nevertheless, the Special Edition comes with various hardware upgrades compared to its predecessor, even though it still uses the same 4,400 mAh battery and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy processor.

    Improved Features

    On the plus side, the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition is equipped with a brand-new 200 MP primary camera. In contrast, the design has undergone several changes from the standard Galaxy Z Fold6. For instance, Samsung has managed to decrease its thickness by over 12%, now measuring 10.6 mm, while also increasing its width by 10 mm when opened.

    Display and Crease Visibility

    Therefore, the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition boasts an 8-inch internal display, larger than the 7.6-inch display found in the Galaxy Z Fold6. Early footage suggests that Samsung has successfully addressed the issue of crease visibility, which has plagued all previous Galaxy Z Fold models.

    As a result, it is hard to discern the crease when the device’s foldable screen is in use. However, Ross Young from Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) has changed his view regarding the materials used in the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition. He now claims that Samsung has opted for thicker Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) instead of Ultra Flexible Glass (UFG), which also means it lacks S Pen compatibility.

    Samsung W25 and W25 Flip Now Available for Pre-Order in China

    Samsung fans in China have a reason to celebrate, as two new foldable smartphones have hit the market: the Samsung W25 and the Samsung W25 Flip. Currently, both devices are open for pre-order and they join the previously announced Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6, which are also available in China.

    Features of the Samsung W25

    The Samsung W25 serves as the Chinese version of the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition that was introduced in South Korea last month. It features larger displays, a powerful 200MP main camera, and an impressive 16GB of RAM. The design includes gold accents on the frame, around the rear cameras, and on the hinge, setting it apart from other models. Notably, the W25 offers a 1TB storage option, which is a step up from the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition that only offers 512GB.

    Additionally, the W25 comes with a power adapter included in the box, although it’s only a 25W charger, along with a protective case to keep the device safe from damage.

    The W25 Flip’s Unique Design

    In contrast, the W25 Flip presents a cosmetic variation from the Galaxy Z Flip 6, featuring gold trim around the cameras, hinge, and frame. This model also shares the same IP48 rating for dust and water resistance, is powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, and supports 25W wired charging. Instead of using Gorilla Glass Victus 2, the W25 Flip has a ceramic back panel, distinguishing it from its Galaxy Z counterparts.

    Samsung has officially started taking pre-orders for both devices in China, with a release date set for November 15. The Samsung W25 is priced starting at ¥15,999 (approximately $2,229/€2,080) for the 16GB RAM + 512GB storage version, while the 16GB RAM + 1TB variant is available for ¥17,999 (around $2,507/€2,340).

    Pricing for the W25 Flip

    The Samsung W25 Flip is offered in just one configuration, which includes 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. This model has a price tag of ¥9,999 (about $1,393/€1,300).

The images show that these models keep the classic black-and-gold style of the W-series, but now have a unique pattern on the sides instead of the typical smooth surface.

    Design Aspects

    The Samsung W25 is designed like a book and is said to take inspiration from the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition, which is a special version of the Z Fold6 only available in South Korea. The retail box for W25 and W25 Flip also reflects their stylish design.

    On the other hand, the W25 Flip will resemble the Galaxy Z Flip6. Both devices present a luxurious appearance with golden accents on the metal frame and camera area, matching the sophisticated look of Samsung’s W-series.

    Expected Features

    The W25 is likely to have features similar to the Z Fold Special Edition, suggesting it may offer larger screens: a 6.5-inch cover display and an 8.0-inch internal display, which are bigger than the Z Fold 6’s 6.3-inch and 7.6-inch screens. It will come with an impressive 200 MP main camera, replacing the standard 50 MP camera found in the regular Z Fold 6. However, it won’t have S Pen support. With the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, it aims to provide good performance, similar to other top-tier foldables.

    The W25 Flip is anticipated to keep the main features of the Galaxy Z Flip6. It’s expected to feature a 6.7-inch folding display along with a 3.4-inch cover screen. This device, also powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, might include 12GB of RAM and storage options of up to 512GB. The camera arrangement is set to stay the same, with a 50 MP main camera, a 12 MP ultrawide camera, and a 10 MP front camera for selfies. Nevertheless, the W25 Flip is rumored to be a bit heavier than the Z Flip6 (187g), weighing in at 198g, due to different materials used.

    Samsung is gearing up for a Galaxy Unpacked event on July 10, 2024, where the company is expected to unveil its next-generation foldable smartphones, including the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6. Alongside these, the Galaxy Watch 7 and new Galaxy Buds are also anticipated. Rumors suggest that Samsung has another foldable device in the works, named the Galaxy Z Fold Slim. The tipster Ice Universe has provided more details about this upcoming smartphone.

    As reported by Ice Universe, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim will be a more lightweight and thinner variant of the Z Fold 6, but it will not support the SPen. This new device will be introduced in China under the name Samsung W25. The tipster also mentions that the device is set to be released in October, although it remains uncertain whether it will be named the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim or Samsung W25.

    Samsung W24 & W24 Flip

    For those unfamiliar, the Samsung W series smartphones are exclusive to China. Samsung partners with China Telecom to launch these high-end rebranded versions of its latest Galaxy Z series devices. The proceeds from the sales of the Samsung W series are directed towards charitable causes. Last year, Samsung introduced the Samsung W24 and W24 Flip, which were essentially rebranded versions of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5, featuring a luxurious design.

    Regarding the Galaxy Fold 6 Slim, it was previously identified with model numbers SM-F958N and SM-W9025, known as the “Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra.” The former model is intended for the South Korean market, while the latter is designated for the Chinese market. It is currently unknown if Samsung plans to launch this smartphone outside of these two regions.
