The Oppo Find X8 and X8 Pro were launched in India last November, featuring the MediaTek Dimensity 9400 chipset. These devices are the first from Oppo to implement Google’s new Find My Device Network. The Power Menu on the Find X8 series now includes a notification stating, “You can locate this phone with ‘Find My Device’ even when powered off.” Furthermore, the settings section for ‘Find My Device’ mentions, “Find My Device can also use the network to help locate this device when it’s powered off or out of battery.” This upgrade gives users an additional layer of protection for finding their lost or stolen phones, even in tough situations.
Understanding How It Works
The Powered Off Finding feature addresses a major drawback in Android devices—the inability to send location signals when powered down or out of charge. Here’s the breakdown of its functionality: The feature enables the phone to retain pre-computed Bluetooth beacons. This allows the device to send encrypted location information even when it’s off. The information is then processed through the Find My Device Network and sent to the owner of the device.
To make this possible, the phone utilizes a backup battery system that maintains power to critical components, like Bluetooth and ultra-wideband chips, even when the primary battery has run out.
