OnePlus and Oppo May End Flagship Foldable Smartphones

Transsion, known for its brands like Tecno and Infinix, has built a reputation for being quick, adaptable, and innovative in the consumer electronics space. However, it seems the company has made the decision to exit the foldable smartphone arena, indicating that there won’t be a follow-up to its ambitious Phantom V Fold2.

    Rumors About a Major Competitor

An even more prominent Chinese company is said to be considering a similar move, as reported by Laifeng.com. While the identity of the company is not disclosed in the report, it’s suggested that they have a series of high-end foldables designed in the same book-style format as the V Fold2.

    Possible Implications for Oppo

This unnamed manufacturer could possibly be Oppo, which has also been rumored to have scrapped the successor to its smaller foldable, the clamshell-type Find N3 Flip. This mirrors a similar choice made by its sister brand, Vivo, regarding the X Flip 2.

However, Oppo is still active in the flagship foldable market with its Find N3, also referred to as the OnePlus Open. This device stands as a key competitor against the likes of Google Pixel Fold and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series on platforms like Amazon.

    Future Prospects and Market Dynamics

The second generation of Oppo’s foldable is expected to improve significantly, boasting features like magnetic wireless charging, a more expansive main flexible OLED display, and the same Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset found in the brand’s current flagship smartphone.

The foldable device market can be quite unstable, as evidenced by Xiaomi’s declining sales of its premium 4th-gen Mix Fold, in contrast to the success of its first-gen Mix Flip clamshell, which is anticipated to achieve shipments nearly five times greater than the Fold 4 in China by year-end.

In conclusion, the unexpected absence of the Open 2 (or 3) could negatively affect the international market. This would leave its few competitors with less motivation to enhance the capabilities introduced by its first iteration, which included a more “normal-sized” cover display, faster charging, potentially improved Open Canvas multitasking, and a full-sized Hasselblad-branded camera bump.

  • Leaked Images Show Different Design for Oppo Find N3/OnePlus Open

Leaked Images Show Different Design for Oppo Find N3/OnePlus Open

During the development of a smartphone, many versions are created before a final model is chosen. Occasionally, some discarded designs become public, showing us what could have been. The latest example is the Oppo Find N3 (known as the OnePlus Open in certain regions), with images of a rejected design appearing online.

    Design Insights

The pictures, shared on Weibo, indicate that the Oppo Find N3 might have been released with a two-tone appearance, differing from the single color/material design that ultimately reached consumers. The Find N3 is available in four colors with two different material finishes: Green and Gold feature a glass back, while Black and Red come with a vegan leather finish.

These new visuals suggest that the phone could have had a combination of metal/glass and leather. They also indicate that the device would have included Oppo and Hasselblad branding along the vertical stripes.

    Similarities to Final Product

Aside from the color variations, the overall design remains unchanged from the final product. The rounded corners of the frame and the large circular camera module on the back show that the phone’s design was mostly completed at this point.

We can only guess why Oppo opted for a single color/material finish in the end. Nonetheless, both the Oppo Find N3 and OnePlus Open (currently available on Amazon for $1,299) have garnered positive feedback for their design. For those who prefer a two-tone finish, the Oppo Find X7 Ultra offers a faux leather and frosted glass design.

A Design That Marries Elegance with Robustness

The Find N3 is a marvel of engineering with its sleek body line and classic circular lens module design. It’s surprisingly slim with a fuselage expansion thickness of just 5.8mm, and a folding thickness of 11.7mm. Depending on your preference, you can opt for the glass version weighing 245g or the leather version at 239g. The color palette is equally attractive with options like Thousand Mountains Green, Log Gold, and Underwater Black.

Both screens attain a 2800nit dynamic peak brightness with ProXDR display technology, enhancing the dynamic range by 8 times. The internal screen, a 7.8-inch AMOLED flexible display, supports a 120Hz refresh rate. On the other hand, the external screen is a 6.3-inch OLED display, also supporting a 120Hz refresh rate. Under the hood, the Find N3 houses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile processing platform, supplemented by LPDDR5X memory and UFS 4.0 flash memory. This powerhouse is cooled by a dual-axis graphite heat dissipation system, ensuring smooth performance even under demanding tasks.

Imaging and Battery Life: No Compromises

OPPO claims to “open a new generation of mobile imaging” with the Find N3. The rear setup comprises a 48MP main camera, a 48MP ultra-wide-angle, and a 64MP periscopic telephoto lens. The external screen front hosts a 32MP camera, while the internal screen front features a 20MP camera. With a robust 4805mAh battery supporting 67W fast charge, you can hit 100% battery in just 42 minutes. The inclusion of a multi-speaker system and a security chip with national secret level 2 certification are cherries on top, providing an immersive audio experience and chip-level protection for your data respectively.

With a plethora of advanced features wrapped in a stylish design, the OPPO Find N3 is indeed a compelling proposition for anyone looking to venture into the foldable smartphone territory without sacrificing on performance or aesthetics.
