  • Virtual Boy Revived: New Accessory for Switch and Switch 2

Virtual Boy Revived: New Accessory for Switch and Switch 2

    Key Takeaways

    1. The Virtual Boy was a 32-bit console released by Nintendo in 1995, known for its stereoscopic 3D images but only had a red and black display.
    2. The console was commercially and critically unsuccessful, with only 22 games available and users reporting headaches and eye strain.
    3. The Virtual Boy is making a comeback as an accessory for the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, with two versions: a $100 plastic replica and a $25 cardboard version.
    4. To access the Virtual Boy games, players need a Nintendo Switch, an Expansion Pack membership, and will have access to 14 of the original games starting February 17, 2026.
    5. The move to reintroduce the Virtual Boy seems aimed at collectors, as the games still use the outdated red and black display, and Nintendo has not addressed the previous health concerns.

In 1995, Nintendo introduced its brief 32-bit console known as the Virtual Boy, which was on the market for less than a year.

A Look at the Virtual Boy

This console was quite innovative for its time, being able to create stereoscopic 3D images, though it only had a monochrome display that was red and black.

Unfortuantly, it didn’t do well, receiving negative feedback both commercially and critically, with only a limited selection of 22 games available. To make matters worse, users reported experiencing headaches and eye strain while playing.

A Comeback for the Virtual Boy

Now, the console is making a comeback as an accessory for the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. There will be two options available: a $100 plastic replica of the original and a more affordable $25 cardboard version.

Purchasing either of these accessories is necessary, and you’ll also need a Nintendo Switch along with an Expansion Pack membership to access the games. The Virtual Boy titles are set to join the Nintendo Classics library on February 17, 2026.

    Game Selection and Membership Details

Nintendo plans to roll out 14 of the original 22 games, such as Wario Land, Red Alarm, Mario Clash, Golf, Tetris 3D, Vertical Force, Jack Bros., Mario Tennis, Teleroboxer, Galactic Pinball, and more.

Additionally, a Nintendo Switch Online membership will be required to buy the Virtual Boy accessory. An announcement for the pre-order date is expected soon.

Honestly, this move seems to make little sense except for collectors. The games still feature the red and black display and appear very outdated compared to modern standards. Nintendo has yet to provide detailed plans for addressing the headache and eye strain issues that the Virtual Boy was known for.

  • PS5 Price Estimate: Should Be $229 as Console Costs Rise

PS5 Price Estimate: Should Be $229 as Console Costs Rise

    Key Takeaways

    1. Price hikes for consoles that have been on the market for four years or more, like the PS5, Xbox, and Switch, are surprising and frustrating for consumers.
    2. Historically, console prices typically drop over 50% after three years, but current consoles like the PS5 and Switch remain close to their original prices.
    3. The PS5 Digital’s new price of $500 exceeds the inflation-adjusted launch price, indicating a deviation from traditional pricing trends.
    4. Competing consoles are also facing similar pricing issues, with expected future prices significantly higher than adjusted estimates.
    5. Factors such as component shortages and rising manufacturing costs have kept console prices stable, but buyers continue to purchase them despite the increases.

Price hikes for consoles that have been around for four years or more are annoying for consumers. The PS5 is the latest to see a $50 bump in price in the U.S. With Xbox and Switch systems also becoming more expensive, an article from Ars Technica talks about how strange these increasing prices are.

    Price Comparisons Over Time

The article takes a look at price trends of consoles, reaching back to 1977 and adjusting for inflation. Typically, most systems see their prices drop by more than 50% after three years on the market. However, the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch are still almost as pricey, if not more, than when they first launched.

    Surprising Estimates

While the overall rise in good prices skews the view a bit, the estimates from Ars Technica are quite eye-opening. Following the typical trends, the PS5 Digital should be priced at $229.02, and the PS5 with a disc drive would be around $286.28. Interestingly, the new price of $500 for the digital version is actually higher than the inflation-adjusted launch MSRP of $497.17.

    Competition Doesn’t Fare Better

PlayStation’s competition isn’t in a better spot either. The original non-OLED Switch is expected to cost about $116.21 in 2025, while the OLED model at $400 is nearly twice the expected price of $216.04.

    Reasons Behind the Price Stability

Even though tariffs have become a topic of discussion lately, console prices held steady for a number of years during their lifecycles. The lack of earlier price drops can be attributed to component shortages and rising manufacturing costs. The chips that are used in these gaming consoles haven’t become significantly smaller or cheaper either.

    Buyers Still Paying

In the end, Sony can defend the PS5 price hike as long as customers continue to buy their consoles. The Switch 2 is still at the same price for now, with Nintendo opting to increase the prices of older handhelds and accessories instead. At the same time, Microsoft is shifting its focus away from the Xbox Series X and S. With higher game prices as well, gamers are finding little hope for relief anytime soon.

  • GameStop Leaks Hollow Knight: Silksong Pre-Order Price Details

GameStop Leaks Hollow Knight: Silksong Pre-Order Price Details

    Key Takeaways

    1. Release Date Announced: Hollow Knight: Silksong will be released on September 4th, 2023.

    2. Pricing Information: The digital version for Switch is listed at $19.99, which is $5 more than the original Hollow Knight’s launch price.

    3. Increased Anticipation: Over 5 million users on Steam have wishlisted Silksong, indicating high demand and excitement among fans.

    4. Availability on Multiple Platforms: Silksong will be available on Switch, PC, Xbox, and PS5, with a day-one release on Xbox Game Pass.

    5. Physical Copies Delay: Physical copies of Silksong may not be available until 2026, while a cartridge version for Switch 2 has been spotted.

Team Cherry has been keeping fans on their toes since they announced Hollow Knight: Silksong back in 2019. Now, after much anticipation, the developer finally disclosed a release date of September 4th during Gamescom. However, details about pre-orders were not shared. Yet, GameStop has recently listed the digital version for Switch at $19.99. If this isn’t a mistake, the latest news about Silksong will surely excite fans of this eagerly awaited Metroidvania game.

    Pricing and Expectations

When Hollow Knight first came out in 2017, it was priced at a reasonable $14.99. Team Cherry had successfully completed a Kickstarter campaign that exceeded its fundraising goals. Therefore, a price of $5 more for Silksong doesn’t seem too outrageous. Nevertheless, the sequel promises a much broader experience, featuring more bosses, diverse environments, and crafting elements. Even with a longer development period, it seems the indie studio managed to keep costs in check.

    Competition in the Market

At the price of $19.99, Silksong should find itself in a good position against AAA competitors in terms of sales. Before more information on pre-orders comes out, over 5 million users on Steam have already wishlisted the game. Meanwhile, Hollow Knight, the original game, has also seen a surge in interest, recently surpassing 15 million copies sold and hitting record player counts on Valve’s platform.

    Future Availability

It’s worth noting that even if the Switch pre-order listing is indeed a mistake, GameStop might still honor the listed price. Currently, there is no news regarding other platforms. A version for the Switch 2 is anticipated to launch alongside Silksong on September 4th, with options for PC, Xbox, and PS5 players as well. Furthermore, it will be available as a day-one title on Xbox Game Pass, after being showcased to promote the ROG Xbox Ally handhelds at Gamescom.

For those who prefer physical copies, they may have to wait until 2026 for a non-digital version of Silksong. Interestingly, a cartridge version for the Switch 2 was spotted at a Polish retailer several months ago.

Pokémon Champions was announced during the Pokémon Presents livestream on February 27. This game is being developed by The Pokémon Company along with Game Freak and is designed to bring back memories for fans of Pokémon Stadium. Unlike the main series, which includes RPG elements, this game focuses solely on turn-based combat, emphasizing multiplayer and ranked matches. Additionally, it will serve as a new venue for official tournaments, enabling players to transfer their Pokémon from other games using Pokémon HOME.

    Insights from the VGC

During the Pokémon Video Game Championships (VGC), which took place from August 15 to 17 in Honolulu, Hawaii, there were updates not just on the matches but also about Pokémon Champions. On August 17, The Pokémon Company released a statement confirming the game will be a “Free-to-Start” title, putting to rest previous doubts regarding its pricing model.

    Questions Around “Free-to-Start”

The exact meaning of “Free-to-Start” in this context is still not fully understood. The press release also refers to a “Paid Digital Version,” but The Pokémon Company has not yet explained how this version will differ from the free one. It’s possible that the free version might be just a demo, or the paid version may unlock extra features like ranked battles or access to tournament events.

    Future Competitions and Platforms

While Pokémon Champions does not have a confirmed release date yet, it is already planned to be used in competitive events at VGC 2026. To ensure players have enough time to get ready, an earlier launch seems probable. The game is expected to be available on Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, as well as on iOS and Android platforms.

The main activities involve arranging your bookshelves, interacting with familiar faces, and fulfilling quirky requests from new customers.

  • Rising Prices for Nintendo Switch Family and Accessories

Rising Prices for Nintendo Switch Family and Accessories

    Key Takeaways

    1. The Nintendo Switch 2 is performing well in the market, allowing Nintendo to avoid price increases for it.
    2. Price increases for the original Nintendo Switch models and accessories are set to take effect on August 3, influenced by market conditions.
    3. The original Switch family includes the Nintendo Switch OLED, standard Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and various accessories.
    4. Some accessories related to the Nintendo Switch 2 and select amiibo figures will also see price increases.
    5. As of June 30, the original Switch models have collectively sold over 153 million units since their release.

With the recent triumph of the Nintendo Switch 2 in the market, Nintendo has manage to avoid raising prices due to tariffs and shifting market conditions. However, this is not true for the original line of Switch handhelds, which is seeing a price increase, although the exact amount is still unknown. This price adjustment was already implemented in Canada at the end of June.

    Pricing Changes Announced

According to an update on the Nintendo US website, the pricing for the original Nintendo Switch family of devices will change “based on market conditions.” This change will affect the Nintendo Switch OLED, the standard Nintendo Switch, the Nintendo Switch Lite, and various Switch accessories.

    Impact on Other Products

While the Nintendo Switch 2, along with its games and online membership fees, remain unaffected for now, some accessories related to the Switch 2, certain amiibo figures, and the Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo will also see price increases.

As of this moment, the exact impact of these price changes is still uncertain, but they will come into effect starting August 3. The new pricing will be reflected on the US online store. This isn’t unexpected, as Nintendo previously made similar changes to Canadian pricing in June. The underlying reason was similar, as the Trump administration had ceased trade discussions with Canada.

    Sales Milestones

As per Nintendo’s figures up until June 30, the original Switch, Switch OLED, and Switch Lite have achieved over 153 million units sold since their release. The Switch debuted in March 2017, followed by the Switch Lite in September 2019, and the Switch OLED in October 2021.
