TCL Electronics has announced a remarkable 14.8% increase in global TV shipments for 2024, hitting a record high of 29 million units. This surge is attributed to the company’s effective dual-brand approach (“TCL + Thunderbird”), a strong focus on mid to high-end products, and a commitment to large-screen televisions. In the fourth quarter of 2024, shipments alone grew by 19.3% compared to the same quarter last year and 20% from the previous quarter.
Growth Driven by Large Screens and Mini LED Technology
The demand for large-screen TVs has been a major factor in this growth. Shipments for models 65 inches and larger increased by 21.3%, while those for 75 inches and above experienced an impressive 39.8% rise. Consequently, the average size of TCL TV shipments rose by 1.3 inches to 52.4 inches. Premium product categories have also thrived, with Quantum Dot TV shipments soaring by 69.5% and Mini LED TV shipments skyrocketing by 194.5%.
International Demand and Sporting Events Boost Shipments
TCL’s success has been largely fueled by international demand, especially during major sporting events. Shipments outside of China increased by 17.6%, with large-screen models leading this growth. In Europe, TCL-branded TV shipments surged by 33.8%, particularly in the 75-inch and larger category. In North America, TCL secured a top-two spot in retail market share, accompanied by a 6.4% rise in shipments. Emerging markets, particularly in Latin America and the Middle East-Africa region, also showed robust growth at 12.7%.
Strong Performance in China with Thunderbird Brand
In China, shipments grew by 5.8%, with the Thunderbird brand, aimed at younger consumers, experiencing a remarkable 38.5% increase. The average TV size in the Chinese market has reached 63.3 inches, while shipments of models 75 inches and larger grew by 23.1%. Mini LED TVs have seen particularly high demand, with shipments jumping by 264.7%, making up 15.3% of TCL’s total shipments in China.
Launch of the QM6K Series Mini LED TVs
TCL has further solidified its position in the premium market by launching the QM6K series Mini LED TVs at CES 2025. These new models feature substantial enhancements in brightness, blooming control, and color accuracy. Thanks to a new Super High Energy Mini LED chip, brightness is increased by 53%, while an improved backlight design minimizes halo effects.
The QM6K series will be available in sizes ranging from 50 to 98 inches and supports Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10+, IMAX Enhanced, and features a 144Hz refresh rate with 288Hz VRR for gaming. They come equipped with Onkyo-designed 2.1-channel speakers and Google TV with hands-free voice control. The series is set to launch in the U.S. in early 2025, followed by a gradual global rollout.
