    The Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition has been available for nearly two months now, having made its debut on October 21 in South Korea. While this Special Edition brings several enhancements, it looks like Samsung has only included nearly all of the Galaxy Z Fold6’s cameras.

    Testing Results

    Upon our first tests, it became clear that the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition actually features three new cameras instead of just one. The Special Edition retains the ISOCELL 3K1 from the Galaxy Z Fold6 for its telephoto camera, which is currently priced at $1,149.99 when renewed on Amazon. Additionally, the same ISOCELL 3K1 is used as the ultra-wide-angle camera. Interestingly, Samsung has activated macro mode on this camera, as noted by Tech with Benefits in their latest video.

    Camera Specifications

    For the main camera, the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition utilizes the ISOCELL HP2, which is also found in the Galaxy S23 Ultra and Galaxy S24 Ultra. This means that the Special Edition has a 1/1.3-inch optical format, 0.6 µm pixels, and an f/1.8 aperture available for use.

    Selfie Camera Changes

    In a change of pace, Samsung has opted for the Sony IMX564 and IMX596 for the Special Edition’s selfie cameras, instead of the IMX374 or IMX471 found in the Galaxy Z Fold6. This could be seen as a bit of a downgrade, since the new cameras have smaller pixels and optical formats compared to those in the Galaxy Z Fold6. As a result, it looks like the ISOCELL HP2 might be the only real hardware improvement in the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition.

    Sadly, it looks like these models won’t be available worldwide, at least not officially. However, Jeff Springer from SammyGuru has gotten his hands on one. Even better, he has already posted what seems to be the very first English unboxing video of the device, which we’ve included below.

    Design Insights

    As shown in the images above, the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition appears to be slimmer than its 12% reduction indicates when stacked against the Galaxy Z Fold6. This Special Edition is also taller and wider compared to its foldable sibling, while still offering a more comfortable grip than the Galaxy S24 Ultra. Additionally, Springer gives us an up-close view of the Special Edition’s crease, which is significantly less prominent than the one that characterizes the Galaxy Z Fold6.

    Enhanced Usability

    Moreover, the Special Edition seems to feature a more functional cover display, thanks to an additional 4.7 mm width when it’s folded. Ultimately, the software experience will be quite familiar to anyone who has used a recent Galaxy Z Fold model. Incidentally, it’s still possible to import a Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition, although it comes at a pretty steep price for now.

Nevertheless, the Special Edition comes with various hardware upgrades compared to its predecessor, even though it still uses the same 4,400 mAh battery and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy processor.

    Improved Features

    On the plus side, the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition is equipped with a brand-new 200 MP primary camera. In contrast, the design has undergone several changes from the standard Galaxy Z Fold6. For instance, Samsung has managed to decrease its thickness by over 12%, now measuring 10.6 mm, while also increasing its width by 10 mm when opened.

    Display and Crease Visibility

    Therefore, the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition boasts an 8-inch internal display, larger than the 7.6-inch display found in the Galaxy Z Fold6. Early footage suggests that Samsung has successfully addressed the issue of crease visibility, which has plagued all previous Galaxy Z Fold models.

    As a result, it is hard to discern the crease when the device’s foldable screen is in use. However, Ross Young from Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) has changed his view regarding the materials used in the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition. He now claims that Samsung has opted for thicker Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) instead of Ultra Flexible Glass (UFG), which also means it lacks S Pen compatibility.

The UK-based Average Dad Tech, which also runs the Average Dad YouTube channel, is making this device available globally, similar to how they’ve handled other rare foldables before.

    Pricing Information

    To give you an idea, the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition is priced at KRW 2,789,600 in South Korea, which is around $2,015 at the current exchange rate. In contrast, Average Dad Tech is offering the same model for $3,447, or $3,274.65 if you apply the discount code OCTOBER5OFF during checkout.     Availability Details

    Currently, the W25 and W25 Flip are only available in China, where they are expected to stay. Interestingly, Samsung already has other foldable models on the market in China, which share a lot of hardware with these new additions. For instance, both the W25 and W25 Flip are powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy chipsets and have the same core components as the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition and Galaxy Z Flip6.

    Specifications Comparison

    Notably, the W25 weighs 255 g, making it almost 20 g heavier than the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition. However, there don’t seem to be any technical differences between these two devices. In contrast, the W25 Flip appears to have the same hardware as the Galaxy Z Flip6. Samsung has set the W25 and W25 Flip apart from their standard versions by giving them elegant black and gold designs, similar to their earlier models.     The illustrations included in the patent display the sensor being used in a foldable smartphone. It explains how a PPG sensor, similar to the one found in the Galaxy Watch7, would be incorporated directly into the display. Instead of using the typical red and green LEDs for tracking the user’s pulse and blood oxygen levels, the screen’s pixels take on this role. The emitted light’s color and brightness can be modified based on touch pressure to optimize the signal-to-noise ratio continuously.

    Functionality of Pixels

    Interestingly, the pixels also act as light-sensitive sensors at the same time. While PPG sensors typically only track heart rate and blood oxygen, this setup would require a pressure sensor alongside the PPG sensor to determine blood pressure by measuring how firmly a user presses their finger against the display.

    Accuracy Concerns

    However, the precision of the blood pressure readings from this sensor remains uncertain. The Galaxy Watch7, for example, needs calibration with a traditional blood pressure monitor to ensure its readings are accurate. In contrast, the Huawei Watch D2 employs a more sophisticated method that utilizes an inflatable wristband functioning like a blood pressure cuff, with users needing to keep their wrist at heart level for correct measurements. It’s worth noting that patents do not guarantee that Samsung plans to produce such a device.

    First Glimpse of the Special Edition Fold

    We’ve had just a brief look at this phone previously, thanks to a leaked render from a month back. Now, another leak has surfaced, providing us with the first live images of the Special Edition Fold.

    The source of this leak is an X (formerly Twitter) user named @Jukanlosreve, who posted somewhat blurry images of this anticipated foldable. This specific model appears to be aimed at the Chinese market, where it’s rumored to be referred to as the “Samsung Galaxy W25.”

    Design and Market Differences

    It stands out due to the unique logo found at the bottom, which is specifically used for Samsung’s foldable devices in China. In South Korea, however, it is expected to be named the Galaxy Fold Special Edition, which is its only other market besides China.

    Regrettably, the leak doesn’t provide any specific information about the phone’s features. It’s believed to be sleeker than the standard Fold, and the image of the phone in its folded state does give it a slimmer appearance. Nevertheless, we can’t ascertain its exact thickness.

    Display Improvements and Camera Specs

    Rumors suggest that the inner display will measure 8 inches, an increase from the Z Fold 6’s 7.6 inches. The outer display is also anticipated to expand from 6.3 inches to 6.5 inches.

    Earlier reports indicated that the crease on the new fold’s display would be less visible than that of the Z Fold 6. If this proves to be accurate, it would be a much-appreciated enhancement, since earlier models have seen limited advancements in this area.

    In addition to its slim design, the new foldable is also said to feature a 200MP camera. According to trusted leaker Ice Universe, this camera’s performance may even outshine that of the Galaxy S24 Ultra.
