Samsung and MediaTek Team Up for Upcoming Flagship Smartphones

Samsung has been incorporating MediaTek chipsets into its affordable and mid-tier smartphones for a considerable time, such as in the previous year’s Galaxy A15 (curr. $152 on Amazon). However, this trend shifted with the introduction of the Galaxy Tab S tablets this year, which replaced Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 with MediaTek’s Dimensity 9300+.

    Performance Comparison

At first glance, there seems to be little difference in performance between the two chipsets. Nevertheless, using MediaTek chipsets for the Galaxy Tab S10 Plus and Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra might have assisted Samsung in lowering its production expenses. It’s worth noting that neither MediaTek nor Qualcomm publicly disclose their pricing to OEMs for these chipsets.

    Cost Implications

There have been claims that the Dimensity 9400 is approximately 18% less expensive per unit compared to the Snapdragon 8 Elite, even though both chips are reportedly more than 20% pricier than their previous versions. This leads to speculation that the cost of the Snapdragon 8 Elite influenced Samsung’s choice not to integrate its newer M14 AMOLED display in the Galaxy S25 Ultra.

Rumors suggest that Samsung’s efforts to cut costs will persist if Qualcomm raises prices on its next flagship mobile chipset in comparison to the Snapdragon 8 Elite. According to new information, this could also extend to camera components in the upcoming models. On the other hand, there are indications that Samsung is contemplating the use of MediaTek Dimensity chipsets for the Galaxy S26 series, which might lessen the need for further cost reductions.

  • Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 Plus Confirmed to Use MediaTek Chipset

Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 Plus Confirmed to Use MediaTek Chipset

Samsung's forthcoming Galaxy S24 FE smartphone wasn't the only device from the tech giant to surface on Geekbench today. The upcoming Galaxy Tab S10 Plus has also made an appearance on the benchmarking site.

Identified by the model number SM-X828U, the tablet's IMEI database entry confirms it as the Tab S10 Plus. The "U" suffix signifies that it's a US variant, while other versions such as SM-X826B and SM-X826N correspond to the Global and South Korean markets, respectively.

    Switch to MediaTek Processor

Interestingly, the tablet was listed with the MediaTek Dimensity 9300+ processor on Geekbench. Traditionally, Samsung has preferred Qualcomm's high-end chipsets for its Tab S series. However, for the Galaxy Tab S10 series, the company appears to be shifting to MediaTek.

The Dimensity 9300+ is an octa-core chipset featuring a powerful configuration: one Cortex-X4 core clocked at 3.25GHz, three Cortex-X4 cores running at 2.85GHz, and four Cortex-A720 cores at 2.0GHz. Graphics are likely managed by a Mali-G720 Immortalis MP12 GPU.

    Benchmark Scores and Specifications

This setup resulted in the tablet scoring 2,141 points in single-core tests and 6,952 points in multi-core tests on Geekbench. The device also boasts 12GB of RAM and will come with Android 14 pre-installed.

While the switch to MediaTek is notable, a report from last month suggested that Samsung might employ a dual-chip strategy for its tablets, similar to its Galaxy S series phones. However, the expectation was that the chips would be Qualcomm and Exynos, not MediaTek.

Given the tablet's appearance with the Dimensity 9300+, it could indicate that the earlier report was either incorrect or that MediaTek may be replacing one of the other chip brands.

At this point, details about the Galaxy Tab S10 Plus are limited. It is expected to be accompanied by the Tab S10 Ultra and likely a standard Galaxy Tab S10.

Samsung is preparing to launch new models in its well-known Galaxy Tab lineup, with fresh details emerging about the Galaxy Tab S10 Plus and Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 Plus & Tab S10 Ultra

According to the Android Headlines team, Samsung is working on the Galaxy Tab S10 Plus and Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra. The Galaxy Tab S10 Plus has three model numbers: SM-X828U, SM-X826B, and SM-X826N, while the Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra is identified by the model number SM-X926B.

    Galaxy Tab S10 Plus

The model number for the Galaxy Tab S10 itself hasn’t surfaced yet, possibly because Samsung hasn’t started on it. The model numbers indicate where the devices will be sold. The Galaxy Tab S10 Plus is set to launch in the Global, US, and Korean markets. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra is listed with a Global model number but is expected to also be available in Korea and the US. The lack of a model number for the Galaxy Tab S10 and the single model number for the Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra might suggest that these tablets are not going to be released soon. The Android Headlines team has only found model numbers for the Tab S10 Plus and Tab S10 Ultra.

    Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra

The Android Headlines team also speculates on the release date for the Tab S10 series. They predict that Samsung will unveil the Galaxy Tab S10 series in Q1 2025. This projection is based on Samsung’s trend of launching new Galaxy Tab S series models every 1.5 years. The Galaxy Tab S7 series was introduced in August 2020, followed by the Galaxy Tab S8 series 1.5 years later, and then the Galaxy Tab S9 series another 1.5 years after that. If this pattern continues, the Tab S10 series could be released in January or February 2024.
