How Smart Will Tomorrow’s Bicycles Be?

    Key Takeaway

    – Canyon’s Predict concept bike uses cameras, radar, and motion sensors to analyze traffic and anticipate other road user behavior.
    – The system provides adaptive feedback through lighting, haptic signals, a display, and a helmet with a head-up display.
    – It includes automatic seat post lowering to lower the center of gravity and potentially prevent falls.
    – Though currently a non-motorized road bike, its technologies are likely to migrate into future high-end e-bikes.

    Innovations Unveiled at Eurobike

At trade shows, manufacturers often go the extra mile, showcasing not only specific products that will be available soon but also concepts. The Eurobike bicycle trade show, taking place next week in Frankfurt, is no exception. For example, the manufacturer—which our readers may already be familiar with— manufacturer Canyon will be showcasing the Predict and has already shared information and images in advance. It is a road bike without a motor. Nevertheless, we can easily imagine that sooner or later, certain technologies showcased for the Predict could also find their way into high-end e-bikes.

    Advanced Traffic Analysis and Anticipation

For example, the bike is said to be capable of analyzing the traffic environment. According to Canyon, however, that’s not all. The goal is not only to detect the current traffic situation but also to anticipate the behavior of other road users. The system is designed to assess risks and provide adaptive feedback using adaptive lighting, haptic (tactile) signals, and indicators on the integrated display—as well as a helmet with a head-up display. In addition, according to the manufacturers, there will also be adaptive features such as automatic lowering of the seat post to lower the center of gravity—a small shift in the center of gravity could, in extreme situations, make the difference between a fall and catching the bike.

    Sensor Systems and Product Status

The bike is expected to receive information via a comprehensive sensor system. This includes at least one camera, radar, and a motion sensor in the wheel hub, which could, for example, track steering behavior. Canyon has not yet made a specific product announcement.
