Asus ROG Ally X: More Storage, Better Battery, New Chassis

Asus has officially introduced the ROG Ally X at Computex 2024 after months of anticipation. Although it isn’t a complete sequel to the original Ally, the X version includes several enhancements that make it an attractive choice for portable PC gaming.

    Asus ROG Ally X Specifications

The most significant update is in the internals. While the Z1 Extreme processor remains, it is now housed on a new motherboard that supports full 2280 SSDs, including double-sided drives.

Storage on the base model has been upgraded to a substantial 1TB SSD. Additionally, the RAM has been increased to 24GB of DDR5-7500, with 8GB dedicated to the Z1 Extreme’s integrated GPU.

Furthermore, the ROG Ally X now features an 80mAh battery, which is double the capacity of the original Ally. Asus has also tackled thermal issues with larger heat pipes and quieter fans. This change affects the power draw, with performance mode now running at 17W, up from 15W, and silent mode increasing from 10W to 13W.

    Design and Connectivity

In terms of design, the ROG Ally X maintains its sleek black appearance but has refined its control layout. The D-pad has been enhanced, the joysticks have been redesigned for improved durability and a five-million-cycle lifespan, surpassing the Steam Deck’s two million cycles. The macro button on the back is now smaller and more discreet.

A significant change is the removal of the XGM port, which has been replaced by a second USB Type-C port. One of these ports is Thunderbolt compatible, allowing users to connect an external GPU for more demanding gaming needs.

The display remains the same as the original Ally, featuring a 7-inch 1080p panel with a 120Hz refresh rate.

    Price and Availability

The ROG Ally X is now available for pre-order starting at $799, with shipping commencing on July 22nd. Pre-orders can be made through Best Buy.
