    The Passmark score reveals that the Core Ultra 7 255H achieved an outstanding single-thread score of 4631 points, marking a remarkable 32% increase compared to the Core Ultra 7 155H “Meteor Lake-H” CPU. The Arrow Lake-H series utilizes Lion Cove performance cores, which are showing their value, supported by TSMC’s N3B fabrication process. Interestingly, this benchmark positions the Core Ultra 7 255H approximately 17% ahead of the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 “Strix Point” CPU. However, in terms of overall performance, the Arrow Lake-H model falls short, trailing the Strix Point by nearly 20%.

    Generational Improvements

    When compared to its previous model, the Core Ultra 7 255H exhibits about a 12% advantage in overall performance. While this is a respectable increase from generation to generation, it’s not nearly as striking as the gains seen in single-threaded performance. Additionally, the Arrow Lake-H chips are anticipated to feature integrated GPUs with up to eight Xe LPG+ cores, which will be less powerful than the Xe2 cores found in Lunar Lake processors. The Core Ultra 200H is designed to strike a balance between mobility and performance, offering users more options than the CPUs found at either end of Intel’s spectrum. This new series aims to meet the needs of those looking for both portability and power.

    New Offerings for 2025

    Intel is launching five new Arrow Lake H CPUs, all set to debut in laptops in the first quarter of 2025. These CPUs feature 16 cores, matching the core count of their predecessor, the Intel Meteor Lake H, also referred to as Core Ultra 100H. Unlike the 2024 generation, the Arrow Lake’s cores are based on the Lunar Lake design, incorporating Lion Cove P cores and Skymont E cores. Intel asserts that performance will also see an increase, even though Lion Cove now operates without hyperthreading. The company claims a 15% performance boost compared to Meteor Lake H, despite having a lower thread count (Ultra 9 185H: 22 threads, Ultra 9 285H: 16 threads).

    GPU and AI Enhancements

    On the GPU front, Arrow Lake does not introduce major changes, retaining the Xe cores from Meteor Lake. However, it now features new XMX, which Intel believes will enhance AI capabilities for the GPU and improve gaming performance as well. The NPU technology from Meteor Lake remains unchanged, maintaining a performance level of 11 TOPS. Nevertheless, Intel notes that the H series chips are still formidable in AI tasks, with the total platform TOPS (including CPU, GPU, and NPU) reaching 99 TOPS.

    When it comes to power consumption, the H class chips are optimized to run at a TDP of 28 W, except for the Ultra 9, which operates at 45 W. The maximum power draw of these CPUs can be configured by OEMs, allowing settings of up to 115 W or down to 60 W. This flexibility highlights the advantages of the H series over other Intel CPU ranges.

    A new addition for this generation of Intel H class CPUs is the support for Thunderbolt 5.     A few weeks ago, Intel’s Core Ultra 9 285H processor was spotted on Geekbench. To give you some background, the Arrow Lake-H processor was found in a yet-to-be-released Dell laptop named Pro Max 16 (MC16250). Now, Asus seems to be planning an update for its Zenbook Duo laptop featuring the same processor.

    Current Offerings from Asus

    At this time, Asus has the Zenbook Duo available with the Core Ultra 7 155H and Core Ultra 9 185H processors, currently priced at $1,636 on Amazon. According to two listings from Gear-Up.me, Asus is set to upgrade these processors to the Core Ultra 7 255H and Core Ultra 9 285H. Interestingly, the Core Ultra 7 255H was also recently seen on Geekbench, and we have reported on that separately.

    Processor Specifications

    The listings indicate that the Core Ultra 7 255H and Core Ultra 9 285H will feature 16 and 24 CPU cores, respectively. However, as noted by VideoCardz, earlier leaks about the Arrow Lake-H series hinted that the maximum core count would be 16. This raises questions about the accuracy of the information regarding the Core Ultra 9 285H’s core count.

    Regardless, these processors will be featured in the Zenbook Duo as the Zenbook Duo UX8406CA, which comes with 32 GB of RAM and appears to offer options for either 1 TB or 2 TB of storage. There might be other memory options as well, like a configuration with 16 GB of RAM. As seen in the images below, Gear-Up.me plans to sell the version with the Core Ultra 7 255H for 952.34 Bahraini Dinar (BHD), which translates to about $2,533.

    Pricing for the Core Ultra 9

    On the other hand, the Core Ultra 9 285H is listed at BHD 1,421.93 (approximately $3,782), but it also comes with double the RAM. It’s still uncertain if the pricing will be the same in other regions. As it stands, we believe Asus is likely to officially unveil the Zenbook Duo in January at CES 2025.

    Performance Metrics

    The top-tier Arrow Lake-H CPU appeared on Geekbench, achieving scores of 2,665 in single-core and 15,330 in multi-core tests. It was tested in conjunction with a Dell laptop equipped with 64 GB of DDR5-6400 memory, hinting that it might be targeted towards workstation users. The Core Ultra 9 285H features a total of 16 CPU cores arranged in a 6+10 setup, with the P-core boost clock advertised at 5.4 GHz. Nevertheless, it appears that the CPU is experiencing significant throttling, failing to reach the promised boost clock speeds.

    Comparison with Competitors

    Due to this throttling issue, the Core Ultra 9 285H is only 6% faster than the Meteor Lake-based Core Ultra 9 185H (which scored 2,506 in single-core and 13,972 in multi-core tests) and 9% faster in multi-core performance. It falls short when compared to the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, which managed to score 2,857 and 15,221 points in the same benchmarks. Curiously, even the Lunar Lake-based Core Ultra 9 288V outperforms it in single-core tasks.

    Future Expectations

    While it’s expected that performance will likely improve by the time of launch, the Core Ultra 9 285H does not seem to offer a substantial upgrade over Meteor Lake. It is hoped that there will be a notable enhancement in power efficiency, which Intel has been focusing on since the launch of Lunar Lake earlier this year.

The lineup consists of five SKUs, featuring one Core Ultra 9 model at the top. We get a glimpse into its CPU and integrated GPU performance.

    Core Configurations

    It was previously speculated that Arrow Lake-H would include three types of CPU cores. The P-cores are identified as Lion Cove, while the E-cores are Skymont, and the LP-E cores are Crestmont, which are derived from Meteor Lake. It’s still unclear why Intel chose to reintroduce LP-E cores, particularly given their previous underwhelming performance.

    Thermal Design Power

    The only model with a higher performance, the Core Ultra 9 285H, has a TDP of 45 Watts. The other models are limited to 28 Watts, which aligns closely with prior H SKUs. The entire range appears capable of boosting up to 65 Watts (PL2), based on the available information.

    Integrated Graphics

    Furthermore, the Core Ultra 7 265H, Core Ultra 7255H, and Core Ultra 9 285H all feature an integrated GPU with 8 Xe cores. In contrast, the Core Ultra 5 235H and Core Ultra 5 225H come equipped with 7 Xe cores. Each model’s maximum boost clock speeds decrease progressively.
