    GMKtec Launches AD-GP1 eGPU with OCuLink and USB4 Support

    GMKtec has launched its new eGPU worldwide, just a month after its initial reveal. The AD-GP is now part of the growing family of modern eGPUs featuring an AMD Radeon RX 7600M XT graphics card, which is typically seen in mid-range gaming laptops.

    Powerful Performance

    Even though the RX 7600M XT has been outpaced by the newer Radeon RX 7800M, which can be found in the OneXGPU 2 (currently priced at $999.95 on Amazon), the Navi 33 GPU remains capable of running triple-A games at 1080p or even 1440p in certain situations. However, achieving this level of performance is reliant on connecting the AD-GP using OCuLink, which leverages PCIe 4.0 x4 for optimal output.

    Connectivity Options

    On the other hand, using USB4 will lead to some performance drops, but this is balanced out by features like 100 W device charging support. The eGPU also comes equipped with an SD card reader, four USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports, and an RJ45 Ethernet port. Both connection types allow access to the two DisplayPort 2.0 and two HDMI 2.1 ports included by GMKtec.

    Pricing and Availability

    GMK AD-GP1: USB-C & OCuLink External Graphics Solution

    Some compact notebooks and mini-PCs come with APUs that perform remarkably well and can handle gaming. Yet, depending on the specific game, they might only manage lower frame rates or very basic graphics settings. In certain cases, using an external graphics card can be a viable option for these systems, especially for home use. The market for external graphics solutions has expanded a lot lately, and GMKtec has just introduced a new product to add to the options.

    Overview of the GMK AD-GP1

    The GMK AD-GP1 serves as an external GPU, featuring the AMD Radeon RX 7600M XT and equipped with 8GB of GDDR6 video memory. Unlike various graphics docks out there, the AD-GP1 is not a semi-modular option, meaning users cannot swap out the internal graphics card. On the bright side, its closed design makes it easier to transport. Plus, it’s not overly large, with dimensions of 163.9 x 110.5 x 39.9 mm (6.5 x 4.4 x 1.6 in), making it quite manageable.

    Connectivity and Features

    You can connect the AD-GP1 to a device using USB4 or OCuLink, with the latter providing faster transfer rates due to its four PCIe 4.0 lanes. It also supports USB Power Delivery, which allows the eGPU to deliver up to 100 watts to a compatible host device. For video connections, the AD-GP1 comes with two DisplayPort 2.0 and two HDMI 2.1 ports. However, GMKtec has not yet disclosed any details about pricing or availability.     MGA1: Minisforum eGPU Lacks USB4 and SSD Expansion Features

    Minisforum has been on a roll with its product launches, and just a few days after starting orders for the EliteMini AI370, they have now rolled out the MGA1. This new device is already available in various markets.

    Overview of the MGA1

    The MGA1 is yet another external GPU (eGPU) that is built upon AMD’s Radeon RX 7600M XT GPU. It features 32 Compute Units (CUs) that use AMD’s RDNA 3 architecture. Additionally, the eGPU comes with 8 GB of GDDR6 VRAM, which operates at 18 Gbps across a 128-bit memory bandwidth. Similar specs can be found in One-Netbook’s OneXGPU, which is currently listed at $569.99 for refurbished models on Amazon, along with several other comparable devices.

    Performance and Connectivity

    Essentially, the MGA1 will deliver performance in line with its competitors. However, it does not have a USB4 port for hooking up external gadgets. Instead, Minisforum decided to include a USB 3.1 Type-C port that supports 65 W Power Delivery. The MGA1 opts for OCuLink 4i, offering a PCIe 4.0 x4 interface instead of the more common options.

    Additional Features

    On top of that, the MGA1 is equipped with two DisplayPort 2.0 video outputs, one HDMI 2.1 port, and three USB 3.2 Type-A ports, which can achieve a peak data transfer rate of 10 Gbps. Unfortunately, the device also lacks support for M.2 2280 storage expansion. Nevertheless, Minisforum has set the price for this first eGPU at $559, positioning it similarly to its more flexible competitors, and possibly even higher in some scenarios.
