Galaxy S25 Ultra Battery Update Disappoints Fans

The Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra is anticipated to make its debut in late January 2025, yet it’s already generating buzz. We’ve glimpsed CAD renders indicating several design modifications, although its battery might be a letdown.

    Battery Specifications

Initial rumors hinted that the S25 Ultra’s battery capacity would remain unchanged from its predecessor. A listing on China’s Compulsory Certification (CCC) database, as discovered by 91Mobiles, seems to confirm this speculation. The listing shows a battery capacity of 4,885mAh, which is expected to be marketed as 5,000mAh—identical to the Galaxy S24 Ultra. Additionally, charging speeds are reportedly unchanged.

    Competitive Landscape

This information contrasts with news about forthcoming flagship phones from Chinese brands like Honor, OnePlus, OPPO, Vivo, and Xiaomi, which are anticipated to come with nearly 6,000mAh battery capacities. These companies are also transitioning to Silicon Carbide battery technology, known for its higher energy density compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries. This advancement allows for increased battery capacity in the same physical space or slimmer devices without sacrificing capacity. Samsung appears to be outpaced in these areas.

    Design and Features

Despite potential battery shortcomings, the S25 Ultra remains an attractive flagship contender. Rumors suggest a fresh design with rounded corners, camera enhancements featuring a 200MP main sensor alongside 50MP telephoto and ultrawide lenses, and the power of either the Exynos 2500 or Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 processors, both utilizing efficient 3nm architecture.

The S25 Ultra is also expected to launch with Android 15 and Samsung’s One UI 7.1, likely offering seven years of software updates and exclusive AI features for Galaxy devices.

  • OnePlus Teams Up with Top Battery Maker for New Glacier Battery

OnePlus Teams Up with Top Battery Maker for New Glacier Battery

OnePlus has teamed up with CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited), the world’s top battery manufacturer, to introduce an innovative battery technology named the "OnePlus Glacier Battery."

OnePlus describes the Glacier Battery as “a high-performance battery designed for high-performance mobile phones, a breakthrough in battery life experience, and the beginning of a new era.” However, the specifics of this claim are yet to be detailed.

    Upcoming Communication Meeting

To shed more light on this new technology, OnePlus will host a "OnePlus Glacier Battery Communication Meeting" on June 20th. During this event, more information about the Glacier Battery will be disclosed.

Although the company hasn’t officially announced which device will first feature the new battery, it is speculated that the forthcoming OnePlus Ace 3 Pro will be the first. Previous reports hint that this device will house a substantial 6100mAh battery, a detail confirmed by the well-known tipster Digital Chat Station in a Weibo post earlier today.

    Dual-Cell Design and Fast Charging

According to reports, the OnePlus Ace 3 Pro will sport a dual-cell design comprising two 2970mAh batteries. This setup, paired with the Glacier Battery technology, points towards a notable enhancement in battery performance for the device.

Despite the large battery, the Ace 3 Pro is expected to be less than 9mm thick. It will support 100W charging capability and is projected to charge fully in about 30 minutes. The tipster also mentioned that many future OnePlus phones would incorporate the Glacier Battery, boasting both large capacity and rapid charging speeds.

    Awaiting Detailed Information

Whether the Glacier Battery leverages new battery chemistry, refined cell design, or software optimizations is still unknown. We will have to wait until the June 20th announcement for comprehensive details.

Additionally, the design of the OnePlus Ace 3 Pro was leaked in a poster earlier today. Information regarding its display and processor indicates a DisplayMate A+ rating for the screen and a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, respectively.

  • iPhone 16 Battery: Metal Casing, Higher Capacity, New Tech

iPhone 16 Battery: Metal Casing, Higher Capacity, New Tech

Tipster Majin Bu on X has shared some images of the iPhone 16’s battery pack. Surprisingly, the battery now has a metal casing instead of the usual soft foil packaging. Although it initially looks like dummy units, a closer inspection shows it to be an actual battery, with an additional metal casing on top of the plastic foil packaging.

The metal casing will reportedly improve the heat dissipation

The battery pack retains its familiar shape but now boasts a higher 3,597mAh capacity compared to the iPhone 15’s 3349 mAh. The battery capacity is engraved on the metal surface.

While the exact reason behind Apple’s shift back to a hard casing design is unclear, reports suggest it could be aimed at improving heat dissipation. The iPhone 15 series did suffer from overheating issues post-launch. Though subsequent software updates have largely resolved this for most users, this change in the battery could further enhance heat management.

Inside the metal casing could be a different battery tech

The iPhone 13 Pro Max and 14 Pro Max weigh a hefty 240 grams, which is heavier than the book-style foldable Honor Magic V2 (231g). Last year, Apple replaced the stainless steel middle frame with titanium, making the iPhone 15 Pro Max 19 grams lighter than its predecessor.

The extra metal casing for the battery will make the iPhone 16 heavier than the 171-gram iPhone 15. The higher battery capacity is also expected to contribute to the device’s weight.

Additionally, the use of a metal casing occupies significant internal space, which was one of the major reasons smartphone makers switched to thinner plastic foil packaging. The soft packaging is also safer as it allows gas to expand and exit the battery pack easily in case of an accident, minimizing risk to the user.

That said, there might be new battery technology inside that necessitates a hard casing but doesn’t carry the same explosion risk. It might also offer a higher energy density; otherwise, the phone would have to become thicker to accommodate the 3597mAh metal-encased battery. For example, the vivo X Fold3 Pro houses a 5700mAh battery (the largest battery in a foldable) using relatively new Silicon carbide (Si/C) composite material.
