Hundreds of Samsung Workers Demand Better Wages and Union Acknowledgment
A report by Reuters indicates that one of Samsung Electronics’ significant production facilities in South India is facing operational issues. This has been ongoing for two days, with hundreds of workers participating in the strike. The employees are demanding higher wages, and Samsung's management is actively seeking to address the situation. Samsung holds a prominent position in the Indian market, which is a crucial area for its consumer electronics and home appliances sectors.

The strike is occurring at the Sriperumbudur plant, which primarily manufactures electronic items other than smartphones. Nevertheless, this plant is responsible for approximately 30 percent of Samsung’s yearly revenue from India. The factory has around 1,800 employees, and currently, posters declare that the Chennai site is on an “Indefinite Strike.” Union Leader E. Muthukumar has confirmed that the strike will extend into a third day.
The workers are not only asking for better wages but also improved working hours. They are urging Samsung to recognize a union supported by the Centre of Indian Trade Unions group. Presently, senior officials from Samsung are scheduled to visit the factory to seek a resolution. Around 800 workers have registered their protest outside the factory, coinciding with the important festive season in India. This period is crucial for brands as they typically offer deals to boost sales and attract gift-buyers.
