Rivian has outpaced Tesla in launching a commercial electric van suitable for urban deliveries and, in a larger variant, for carrying more freight.
Introducing the Delivery 500 and Delivery 700
Named the Delivery 500 and Delivery 700, these two commercial vehicles are inspired by Rivian’s specialized Amazon delivery fleet. They will be available for individual buyers starting in April.
While this timeline is a bit longer than the initial Q1 2025 target for its first electric van by about a month, Rivian has now revealed all the specifics about these vans.
Key Specifications and Features
The primary distinction between Rivian’s Delivery 500 and 700 models is the length of their cargo holds, which measure 248 inches and 278 inches, respectively. Both versions feature a driver’s seat designed for optimal visibility and comfort.
Although the range of 160 miles on a full charge from the 100 kWh LFP battery might appear somewhat limited, these vans are intended for urban deliveries and can be charged overnight.
Market Position and Pricing Strategy
Given the growing emission regulations in cities, particularly in central areas, Rivian is strategically positioned for the upcoming shift towards electric delivery vans, especially since anyone can purchase their vehicles now.
The only slightly disappointing aspect is the pricing, but Rivian seems to be aiming for the federal tax credit threshold, which could bring the prices of the Delivery 500 and 700 Series closer to those of typical commercial vans in the US.
