The co-founder of The Chinese Room, Dan Pinchbeck, shared his thoughts about the game “Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2.” He revealed that he asked the publisher Paradox Interactive to completely remove the title from the project, as he believed it did not reflect the quality expected from the series.
Insights from an Interview
During a chat with Cat Burton on The Goth Boss Podcast, Pinchbeck, who left The Chinese Room in 2023 while Bloodlines 2 was still being developed, expressed his concerns about using the name of the 2004 cult classic. He thought that this decision was a major factor in the project’s challenges. He warned that “No one would be happy” with the final outcome.
The Chinese Room was already facing difficulties in taking over a project that had a rocky path at Hardsuit Labs. Pinchbeck felt that the game exuded “the frustration of a team who were desperately trying to finish something and really, really make their mark on it, but it had just gone south.” He clarified that his comments were not meant to criticize Hardsuit Labs or Paradox Interactive.
Reworking the Game
Pinchbeck explained that The Chinese Room aimed to “really pull it apart and put it back together again.” They tried to include various elements from earlier versions and the original 2004 game while keeping the beloved storytelling intact.
In the interview, he shared, “Right from the word go, there was one of the producers that was then at Paradox, now with another publisher; we would sit there and go and have these planning sessions on ‘how do we get Paradox not to call it Bloodlines 2?’” He expressed his frustrations during that time, saying, “That feels like the most important thing that we do here, is come at this and say this isn’t Bloodlines 2, you can’t make Bloodlines 2. There’s not enough time, and there’s not enough money.”
The Ambition of Development
Given the circumstances, trying to recreate such a grand project seemed impossible, so the studio decided that “We can’t make Bloodlines 2, we can’t make Skyrim, but we can make Dishonored.” However, Paradox Interactive was firm on keeping the title because of fan excitement and commercial pressures. Pinchbeck described this situation as “untangling an anaconda f*ball of competing priorities.”
Despite the technical challenges and tight deadlines, Pinchbeck fondly remembered working on the script for the game, stating, “It was really, really important to do justice to the world and the mythos. I had a lot of fun writing the story on that one, because the mythos on the RPG is so brilliant.”
Pinchbeck left The Chinese Room in 2023 during the studio’s restructuring, passing the project to others. He wrapped up the interview by saying, “It was always going to be tricky.”
