Key Takeaways
1. Gamescom and E3 have historically complemented each other rather than competing, with announcements at E3 followed by gameplay at Gamescom.
2. E3’s cancellation has increased Gamescom’s visibility, making it the primary global event for the gaming industry.
3. Gamescom faces challenges in scheduling and aligning with global company calendars due to increased demand for participation.
4. Gamescom has consistently attracted high attendance numbers, surpassing E3, with 335,000 attendees in 2024.
5. Gamescom 2025 is expected to break records with an anticipated 1,500 exhibitors and possibly over 400,000 attendees.
The managing director of The German Games Industry Association, which organizes Gamescom, Felix Falk, recently shared his thoughts in an interview with The Game Business. Falk provided a unique perspective on the video game industry trade shows, emphasizing that Gamescom was never really competing with the now-defunct E3 event in Los Angeles. He believes that the trade events in the gaming world actually complement one another.
Partnership Over Competition
During the interview, Falk elaborated on the relationship between the two significant game expos:
“We always had a great partnership with E3 over the years, and it wasn’t a competition. It was more like… announce your game at E3 and then play it at Gamescom.”
The Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3, held its last physical event in Los Angeles in 2019. That event saw 66,100 attendees, a drop from 69,200 the previous year, which was the highest attendance since the event peaked at 70,000 in 2005.
E3’s Transition
E3 2021 took place online, and the event’s future remained uncertain until December 2023, when the Entertainment Software Association, which organizes E3, officially stated that the event was canceled indefinitely.
While E3’s sudden end opened up new possibilities for Gamescom, Falk mentioned that it also brought challenges for the German gaming expo. He noted:
“In some aspects, it was beneficial because people now look to us as the main global week for games, providing the highest visibility for everyone. So, it’s our duty to create a platform for the industry to meet this expectation.
However, this demand can be a drawback because Gamescom doesn’t have a strong position in the calendar. Often, we have to negotiate more with HQ teams, as it needs to align with the global schedule of companies.”
Gamescom’s Growth
Historically, Gamescom has outperformed E3 in terms of attendee numbers, consistently attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Gamescom 2024 recorded 335,000 attendees from over 120 countries, an increase from 320,000 in 2023. The event peaked in 2019 with 373,000 visitors and had 1,037 exhibitors from 56 countries.
Looking ahead, Gamescom 2025 is scheduled for August 20–24, and it is anticipated to set new records, with an expected 1,500 exhibitors from 72 countries. Falk predicts that the on-site attendance in Cologne, Germany, could exceed 400,000 attendees.
