A group of Chinese firms has successfully conducted the inaugural test flight of a VTOL drone that weighs 2646 lbs and is powered by liquid hydrogen. This test took place on January 9 in the Fengxiang High-tech Industrial Development Zone located in Baoji City, marking a significant advancement in eco-friendly aviation technology.
Introducing the DF600 “Jinghong”
Known as the DF600 “Jinghong,” this drone is the result of collaboration between Shaanxi Tongchen Heguang Cryogenic Technology, Dream Chaser Aerospace Technology, and Beijing Jiaqing New Energy Technology. The drone boasts impressive specifications, including a takeoff weight of approximately 2646 lbs and the capacity to carry a payload ranging from 265 to 353 lbs.
A Greener Flight Experience
With its innovative liquid hydrogen propulsion system, this drone is set to outperform traditional drones that rely on aviation fuel or batteries. It is projected to have a range of over 621 miles on a single flight, making it an attractive choice for extended commercial operations.
Each partner in this ambitious project had distinct responsibilities. Dream Chaser Aerospace, formed by a team from Tsinghua University, was in charge of creating the hybrid tilt-rotor platform for the drone. Meanwhile, Tongchen Cryogenics, which was established in July 2023 in collaboration with Xi’an Jiaotong University, focused on the storage and supply of liquid hydrogen. Beijing Jiaqing, working closely with Tsinghua, contributed the high-power air-cooled fuel cell system.
Future Plans for Liquid Hydrogen
Following the success of this initial flight, officials in Shaanxi are looking to expand the use of liquid hydrogen across various transportation sectors. Plans are in motion to develop a comprehensive industry dedicated to hydrogen production, refueling, storage, transport, and practical applications.
