At the Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology in South Korea, researchers have created a unique capacitor that is built right into the solar cell electronics. This innovation allows for the use of electricity generated by photovoltaic systems without needing to connect to a local power grid. This means that the solar energy can be used only when it’s needed. Additionally, the advanced capacitor has an impressive power density, enabling it to charge large batteries quickly.
Innovative Materials for Increased Performance
To achieve this, a specialized nickel foam is manufactured and enhanced with manganese, cobalt, copper, iron, and zinc. This combination leads to significant improvements in the conductivity and stability of the electrodes, achieving a high energy density of over 35 watt hours per kilogram. While this might seem low for a battery, it is approximately three times greater than what was seen in earlier tests for capacitors.
Exceptional Power Density and Longevity
A crucial feature of this supercapacitor is its power density, which is remarkably high at 2.5 kilowatts, and even reaches 12.3 kilowatts per kilogram in certain configurations. Moreover, the durability is impressive, with over 5,000 charging cycles recorded, where the remaining capacity was still 87.1%. Therefore, these ultracapacitors or supercapacitors have a longer lifespan when they experience less stress.
In certain tests, up to 100,000 cycles were achieved based on varying conditions. This indicates that the capacitor should easily support a photovoltaic system designed to last 20 to 25 years. However, due to typical voltage losses and gradual degradation, the efficiency remains slightly above 5%, which is much lower than that of standard solar cells.
Versatile Applications for Future Use
Despite the efficiency levels, there are numerous potential applications. For instance, off-grid usage is a possibility when electricity is required during periods of low sunlight. There is also the potential to provide stored energy during times of high electricity demand. Finally, the remarkable output capacity allows for the direct charging of large batteries using solar energy.
