  • DJI Power 1.8kW Fast Charger for Car and Solar Charging

DJI Power 1.8kW Fast Charger for Car and Solar Charging

Just a couple of weeks after revealing the 1kW Super Fast Car Charger, which allows users to quickly charge the DJI Power 1000 power station via their vehicles, DJI has introduced an even quicker charger for this power station. The new DJI Power 1.8kW Solar/Car Super Fast Charger offers both car and solar charging, unlike the 1kW Super Fast Car Charger, which only enables fast charging when connected to a vehicle’s battery. Like its predecessor, this new model is compatible only with the DJI Power 1000.

    Connection Details

The DJI Power 1.8kW Solar/Car Super Fast Charger attaches to a car’s battery and utilizes excess power generated by the vehicle’s alternator, reaching 600W. It can also be connected to a solar panel setup with a maximum of 1200W for dual charging, though there are some conditions to consider.

To tap into the full 1800W charging capability, the Power 1000 portable station needs to be linked with a DJI Power Expansion Battery 2000, which boasts a capacity of 2048Wh. For those who might not be aware, the DJI Power 1000 can accommodate up to five expansion batteries, giving it a total capacity of 11,264Wh.

    Charging Performance

When hooked up to both the Power 1000 and the Power Expansion Battery 2000, the DJI Power 1.8kW Solar/Car Super Fast Charger can deliver 1024Wh of power over a 40-minute drive. In comparison, the smaller 1kW Super Fast Car Charger takes roughly 78 minutes to completely charge just the Power 1000 power station.

Besides its vehicle usage, the DJI Power 1.8kW Solar/Car Super Fast Charger can also be utilized at home with solar panels. Users can connect the panels to its XT90 port for charging at up to 1200W. Furthermore, by expanding the XT90 port to an MC4 connector via the DJI Power 1.8kW Super Fast Charger XT90 to MC4 Adapter Cable, users can gain an additional 600W of solar input, reaching a total of 1800W.

    Pricing and Choices

DJI is pricing the 1.8kW Solar/Car Super Fast Charger at $319, which is only $20 more than the 1kW fast charger. It’s currently available for purchase on DJI’s online store.

If you are considering which model to buy, your decision should be based on your requirements. If you don’t own solar panels, then the 1kW Super Fast Charger might be more suitable, as it allows charging the Power 1000 at up to 1000W using your car, compared to the 600W offered by the 1.8kW Solar/Car Super Fast Charger.

For those who have solar panels, like an RV solar panel kit, the 1.8kW charger is the preferable choice since it allows for simultaneous charging from both the vehicle and the solar panels installed on the roof.

  • Ecobee Launches Smart Thermostat Essential for Under $130

Ecobee Launches Smart Thermostat Essential for Under $130

At CES 2025, Ecobee unveiled the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Essential, which is their most affordable smart thermostat to date. This model is significantly smaller than the other thermostats in Ecobee’s range. However, it still features a full-colour touchscreen and is compatible with the Ecobee app, all while maintaining the familiar ‘squircle’ design that Ecobee users love. The Essential is priced at just $129.99.

    Targeting Programmable Thermostat Users

With this new product, Ecobee is clearly aiming at users who have not yet upgraded from old programmable thermostats to more modern options. Nevertheless, Ecobee faces tough competition from Google’s Nest Thermostat (2020), which is available for the same price, or sometimes even cheaper on Amazon. Both of these thermostats can connect to most HVAC systems, but unlike the Nest, the Essential can easily integrate with Ecobee’s $99.99 Smart Sensors. The downside is that connectivity may be limited because Ecobee has been hesitant to support the Matter smart home standard. That said, the entry-level Ecobee thermostat comes with built-in Alexa and works with Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant.

    Changes Coming in March 2025

With the Essential set to launch in March 2025, Ecobee plans to phase out the $150 Ecobee3 Lite. Still, the Ecobee3 Lite will continue to receive support for a few more years, and you can still find it on the Ecobee website while it remains available.

Ecobee’s new product is a clear step toward making smart home technology more accessible to a wider audience, even if it means competing with products at similar price points.

  • Easier Conversion of Ammonia to Hydrogen for Green Fuel

Easier Conversion of Ammonia to Hydrogen for Green Fuel

Ammonia has emerged as a leading candidate for making hydrogen storage and transport easier. Unlike hydrogen gas (H₂), ammonia (NH₃) does not need to be cooled or pressurized to turn into a liquid. Additionally, it doesn’t require special alloys because small hydrogen molecules can pass through even large metals.

    Safety Considerations

Although ammonia, which consists of one nitrogen atom connected to three hydrogen atoms, is not completely safe, there are strict regulations regarding its concentration in the air. High levels can lead to irritation, and while ammonia is not easy to ignite, it can create explosive mixtures under certain circumstances.

    Long History of Safe Storage

Despite these concerns, ammonia has been stored and transported in large amounts without issues for over a century. This history makes it one of the top choices for storing unstable hydrogen. In fact, ammonia’s higher density means it has even more energy per liter compared to hydrogen. Excess energy from renewable sources could be stored as ammonia and utilized later on. However, to use ammonia in fuel cells or hydrogen-powered aircrafts, a more effective and energy-saving method to convert it back into hydrogen needs to be developed.

    Breakthrough at University of Nottingham

In response to this need, the University of Nottingham has introduced an innovative catalyst designed specifically for this conversion. What makes this catalyst special is that its efficiency actually improves over time due to changes in its structure after it has been created.

Researchers, using an electron microscope, observed that the rare element ruthenium, which was magnetically deposited on a layer of graphite, gradually transformed into pyramid-shaped structures as time passed. This new configuration made the conversion of ammonia to hydrogen even more efficient with each use.

This breakthrough marks a crucial advancement in improving the efficiency of hydrogen storage and, consequently, energy storage as a whole. It also demonstrates a more effective way to utilize rare elements such as ruthenium.
