  • Ubisoft Cancels Development of New Splinter Cell Game

Ubisoft Cancels Development of New Splinter Cell Game

    Key Takeaways

    1. Ubisoft canceled a promising Splinter Cell game that was in development in 2017.
    2. The development team felt proud and excited about reviving the franchise and creating a great story for fans.
    3. The cancellation led to disappointment among the team, highlighting issues in the gaming industry regarding project value.
    4. Ubisoft shifted focus to live service games, leading to the transformation of the Splinter Cell project into XDefiant.
    5. XDefiant ultimately flopped, resulting in server shutdowns and the closure of related studios.

Splinter Cell is definitely one of the most loved franchises in gaming, and lots of fans are waiting for a new game to come out. But, according to Jason Schreier from Bloomberg, Ubisoft canceled a game from this series a few years back.

    Insights from the Development Team

In a report, Nick Herman shared that he, along with Dennis Lenart and Pierre Shorette, was developing a Splinter Cell game in 2017 while at Ubisoft. He mentioned that the project was looking very promising, and the entire team felt proud of their work:

“I was thrilled to be involved in reviving this franchise, which had been quiet for a while. We believed we could create an amazing story that fans would really enjoy.”

    Disappointment Over Canceled Project

However, Ubisoft decided to cancel this project, leaving Nick Herman quite disappointed:

“For the first six months, it was really exciting to go to work, because we thought we were on the verge of making something wonderful. Then, you come to the harsh realization that what you care about doesn’t matter to them anymore. This is a frequent issue in the gaming industry.”

    Shift in Focus for Ubisoft

Regarding why the game was canceled, Nick Herman pointed out that Ubisoft shifted its focus to live service games and lost interest in other projects. Consequently, this Splinter Cell game transformed into XDefiant, a title designed to rival Call of Duty. But, as many know, that game was also a flop.

It’s worth mentioning that there was very little content available for players, and the servers shut down last June, just over a year after it launched. This closure led to the shutdown of the San Francisco and Osaka studios.

  • Crystal Dynamics Layoffs Raise Concerns for Next Tomb Raider Game

Crystal Dynamics Layoffs Raise Concerns for Next Tomb Raider Game

    Key Takeaways

    1. Crystal Dynamics has laid off nearly 30 employees as part of a studio reorganization.
    2. The layoffs raise concerns about the development of the upcoming Tomb Raider game.
    3. The studio emphasizes that these changes are necessary for optimizing the game’s development.
    4. Previous layoffs occurred in August and October at Crystal Dynamics and Amazon, respectively.
    5. The next Tomb Raider game will focus on single-player gameplay and use Unreal Engine 5, with potential open-world elements.

Crystal Dynamics appears to be facing some challenges recently. Just yesterday, the studio reported on LinkedIn that nearly 30 employees have been laid off, which raises concerns for the upcoming Tomb Raider game.

    Concerns About the Future

While fans of Tomb Raider are eagerly looking for updates about the new installment in the series, Crystal Dynamics shared a rather troubling announcement on LinkedIn yesterday. They stated:

“Today we’ve made the difficult but necessary decision to reorganize Crystal Dynamics’ studios and teams. As a result, we’ve parted ways with just under 30 team members across various departments and projects as we restructure the company and business for our next generation. Crystal deeply thanks all of those impacted for their incredible talent, hard work, and dedication, which helped shape the studio in so many ways. We are committed to offering our fullest resources and support to you during this transition.”

    Impact on Development

Moreover, Crystal Dynamics suggested that these layoffs were crucial for the studio’s future and the optimization of the next Tomb Raider game’s development. However, this situation might seem quite alarming. There were layoffs in August for this company and in October at Amazon.

It’s hard to picture that this new game won’t be influenced by the recent decisions made by Crystal Dynamics. On the other hand, it’s also possible that the production could proceed smoothly, potentially leading to a reveal before the end of 2025.

    What We Know So Far

To recap, what we are aware of is that the upcoming game will focus on single-player gameplay and utilize Unreal Engine 5. Although some rumors suggest an open-world format, which could provide players with numerous exciting possibilities.

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Player Count Falls Behind Battlefield 6

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Player Count Falls Behind Battlefield 6

    Key Takeaways

    1. Black Ops 7’s peak player count on Steam is significantly lower than Battlefield 6, with around 77,000 players compared to Battlefield 6’s 747,440 at launch.
    2. Black Ops 6 managed over 300,000 players shortly after its launch, indicating a decline in interest for Black Ops 7.
    3. Black Ops 7 is available on Game Pass from day one, which may lead some players to forgo purchasing the game, impacting player numbers.
    4. The campaign mode in Black Ops 7 has received mixed feedback, particularly regarding the lack of a pause option and no checkpoints, frustrating solo players.
    5. Despite a slow start, Activision remains committed to expanding the Call of Duty franchise, but Battlefield 6 is poised for better sales performance.

The open beta for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 has struggled to reach the player numbers seen in Battlefield 6. Although it’s still early days, this trend seems to be continuing with the full version of Activision’s shooter. Nearly 12 hours after its launch, the peak player count on Steam for Black Ops 7 is around 77,000. To compete with the 747,440 players that EA’s Battlefield 6 attracted, Black Ops 7 will need a significant boost.

    Player Count Comparisons

SteamDB monitors various Call of Duty titles on a single page, including Black Ops 6. However, the gap between Black Ops 7 and Battlefield 6 is quite large. When Battlefield 6 launched on October 10th, it broke the record for any Call of Duty game by exceeding 491,670 players.

    Console Popularity

It’s worth noting that Treyarch’s games are very popular on consoles. Unfortunately, data on Xbox and PlayStation players isn’t readily available. Additionally, Black Ops 7 is again part of the Game Pass on day one, leading some subscribers to skip purchasing the game. Rising subscription prices could influence those choices, but the PC Game Pass hasn’t faced the same sharp increases.

    Performance of Black Ops 7

The player count for Black Ops 7 on Steam is also lower than that of its predecessor. Although Black Ops 6 was released on Game Pass, it still managed to attract over 300,000 players soon after launch.

Before their releases, many believed that Battlefield 6 would be the more groundbreaking game. One of the key features is the destructible environments, which are essential for strategy. In contrast, not all updates to the campaign mode in Black Ops 7 have won over fans.

    Campaign Mode Feedback

The campaign in Black Ops 7 now supports teams of 1-4 players, but solo gamers have encountered some issues. One major complaint noted in Steam reviews is the lack of a pause option during gameplay. Players also can’t save their progress in the always-online setting, as there are no checkpoints.

Despite a slow start for Black Ops 7, it’s unlikely that Activision will worry too much. The company is committed to a fast-paced strategy to expand the Call of Duty franchise. Still, Battlefield 6 seems ready to surpass the usually better sales of its competitor.

  • $600 Steam Machine PC Build: Great Performance for AAA Games

$600 Steam Machine PC Build: Great Performance for AAA Games

    Key Takeaways

    1. Valve announced the Steam Machine’s specifications on November 12, but pricing details will be revealed closer to its 2024 release.
    2. The Steam Machine is designed for 4K 60 FPS gameplay, while a YouTuber built a similar PC for an estimated $600 to $650.
    3. The DIY build used a Ryzen 5 5600 CPU and a bios-flashed Radeon RX 6600M GPU, achieving strong performance in modern games at 1,440p.
    4. The Steam Machine features a newer Zen 4 CPU and a more powerful RDNA 3 GPU compared to the YouTuber’s build.
    5. If the Steam Machine can outperform the DIY build at a comparable price, it could be highly successful in the market.

Valve made an announcement about the Steam Machine on November 12, and while its specifications are now known, the pricing remains a mystery. This hybrid PC is set to be available next year, with pricing details expected to be revealed closer to the release date. Nevertheless, Valve has managed to include a notable amount of power in a compact design, claiming it can achieve 4K 60 FPS gameplay with FSR. A YouTuber, however, built his own version of the Steam Machine that performs quite well, maintaining a similar size and a more affordable price tag.

    YouTuber’s Build

The ETA Prime YouTube channel has shared a video (link below) where a mini-ITX PC build is created to closely match Valve’s specifications for the Steam Machine. The YouTuber sourced some second-hand components from eBay and a Radeon GPU from AliExpress, assembling everything inside the ASRock Deskmeet X300 Mini PC (available on Amazon) barebones kit. The dimensions of the case are 218.3 x 219.3 x 168 mm, making it somewhat larger than the Steam Machine, which measures 152 x 162.4 x 156 mm.

    Specifications Breakdown

For the CPU, a Ryzen 5 5600 based on Zen 3 architecture was chosen. While it has the same core count as the Zen 4 CPU found in the Steam Machine, the latter utilizes the newer Zen 4 architecture. The Ryzen 5 5600 is a desktop CPU with a power consumption of up to 65W, compared to the Valve’s offering, which has a TDP of 30W.

As for the GPU, ETA Prime aimed to acquire a desktop Radeon RX 6600 but ended up with a bios-flashed RX 6600M, which still comes with 8 GB of VRAM (matching the Steam Machine). This GPU is built on RDNA 2 architecture and can reach up to 100W, putting it at a slight disadvantage compared to the RDNA 3-based 28 CU GPU in the Steam Machine that can go up to 110W. The performance is akin to a Radeon RX 7600M-level GPU.

    Performance Results

To complete the build, ETA Prime added 16 GB of DDR4 RAM (the same as the Steam Machine) and 1 TB of NVMe storage. He used the 500W PSU included with the barebones kit and installed the latest version of SteamOS.

The DIY build kicked off with Elden Ring, running the game at 1,440p max settings and maintaining a locked 60 FPS. Spider-Man 2 was playable at 1,440p with medium settings using FSR (balanced) and achieved an average of 70 – 75 FPS. When FSR frame generation was enabled and settings upgraded to high, the FPS exceeded 100. Cyberpunk 2077 performed well at high settings (1,440p), staying above 60 FPS. Witcher 3 showed similar results, exceeding 60 FPS at ultra settings with FSR. Doom: The Dark Ages at 1,440p, medium settings, and FSR had a performance range of 60 to 70 FPS. Borderlands 4 did experience some ghosting with FSR frame generation but remained quite playable.

Although ETA Prime did not disclose the exact costs for the components or the total build price, it is estimated to be around $600 to $650. At this price point, providing a complete Windows experience while running modern AAA titles at 1,440p offers great value. Of course, FSR and frame generation play a significant role in the final performance. Valve has indicated that the Steam Machine will be able to deliver 4K 60 FPS and will likely be priced similarly to a PC with the same specifications. Additionally, a known leaker recently suggested that the Steam Machine could be priced below $600 based on the Bill of Materials (BOM) estimate. If the Steam Machine can outperform this DIY build at a comparable price, it would surely be a big success.

  • Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 DLC Introduces Jurassic World Map

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 DLC Introduces Jurassic World Map

    Key Takeaways

    1. Microsoft has launched a new add-on called “Jurassic World: Archipelago” for Flight Simulator 2024, inspired by the movie series.
    2. The add-on introduces 12 new helipads and 9 fictional airfields, all with unique ICAO codes starting with “JW.”
    3. Players can discover nine dinosaurs and iconic film scenes, with gameplay including tasks like photo safaris and transporting personalities.
    4. The add-on features the original soundtrack from Jurassic World and integrates various gameplay challenges.
    5. The DLC is priced at $20, with plans for the price to increase to $25 after the launch period.

Microsoft has launched a new add-on for Flight Simulator 2024 called “Jurassic World: Archipelago.” This add-on is inspired by the famous movie series that first hit theaters in 2015. The storyline takes place just before the events of the original film, and it’s important to note that it doesn’t really align with a serious flight simulation. The downloadable content (DLC) introduces a fictional area close to Costa Rica, but the actual flying simulation remains unchanged.

    New Airports and Helipads

The add-on brings in additional airports, specifically adding 12 new helipads and 9 airfields to Microsoft Flight Simulator. Each location has been given unique ICAO codes, all starting with the initials JW. It’s worth mentioning that these locations are purely fictional. The first letter of the four-character ICAO codes signals the region they belong to, and J is not currently in use. For instance, Vienna’s ICAO code is LOWW (which is different from the IATA code VIE), while Berlin’s code is EDDB (BER). In the United States, ICAO codes often begin with a K, like KSFO for San Francisco (SFO).

    Dinosaurs and Gameplay

Similar to the movie, players can discover multiple dinosaurs in Jurassic World, along with iconic scenes from the film, integrated into the game by developer Orbx in partnership with Microsoft. Players will encounter a total of nine dinosaurs, including the iconic Tyrannosaurus rex and Velociraptor, which are central to the film’s narrative.

The gameplay features several tasks for cockpit crews, including photo safaris, transporting significant personalities, and various challenges that test piloting skills. Additionally, the original soundtrack is included in this DLC.

    Pricing Details

Microsoft claims that this add-on provides the first chance to explore the imagined locations of Jurassic World. As noted, this is a paid DLC which costs $20. However, this price is expected to rise to $25 after the initial launch period.

  • DIY Open-Source 3D-Printed VR Setup with 6 DoF and Controllers

DIY Open-Source 3D-Printed VR Setup with 6 DoF and Controllers

    Key Takeaways

    1. Daniel McKenzie created a basic VR headset with only three degrees of freedom (3DoF), suitable for sim racing.
    2. Critics highlighted the lack of positional tracking (6DoF) as a major flaw, even for sim racing.
    3. Daniel upgraded the headset by adding outside-in tracking and wireless controllers using the open-source HadesVR project.
    4. The new setup allowed for playing Beat Saber, but faced challenges with tracking accuracy and drift due to using a single camera.
    5. The project remains open-source, but required resources have not yet been uploaded to GitHub; updates can be found in the video description on YouTube.

Last month, we shared news about a basic VR headset created by DIY engineer Daniel McKenzie, who posted a video on his YouTube channel, CNCDan. The headset was functional, but it had a significant flaw — it only offered three degrees of freedom (3DoF). This means it could track movements like looking up and down, turning left and right, and tilting the head side to side.

    Daniel’s Focus on Sim Racing

For Daniel, he felt that positional tracking (6DoF) wasn’t necessary, as his primary use case was sim racing, and he believed that 3DoF sufficed. Nonetheless, many critics argued that the absence of positional tracking was a major drawback, emphasizing its importance even in sim racing scenarios.

    Upgraded Features and Tracking System

In light of the feedback, Daniel decided to enhance his system significantly. He added outside-in tracking and wireless controllers to the new version. Instead of starting from square one, he leveraged an open-source project known as HadesVR for the tracking system.

With this updated setup, he succeeded in playing Beat Saber, although it came with some challenges. The positional tracking for the controllers wasn’t flawless since he only used a single camera for tracking. Additionally, both the headset and controllers experienced drift over time because they depended on IMU units.

Open Source Commitment and Future Updates

The initial version of this project was open-source, and this new iteration will also follow suit. However, as of now, Daniel has not uploaded the required resources to the GitHub page, although he has promised to do so. If you are interested in this build, be sure to check the description of the video on YouTube for any updates.

You can purchase the Flashforge Adventurer 5M 3D Printer for $249 on Amazon.

    3. Both RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5090 models are currently backordered at major retailers, with the RTX 5090 priced at $2,499.
    4. Early reviews praise the performance of the ROG XG Mobile (2025), particularly the RTX 5090 variant, for enhancing AAA gaming experiences.
    5. Gaming handhelds using the eGPU are limited by USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 ports, restricting their ability to utilize the full Thunderbolt 5 bandwidth.

Asus has just launched the ROG XG Mobile (2025) in the US, nearly a year after revealing this new eGPU solution at CES 2025 in Las Vegas. To remind you, EXcaliber PC started selling the 2025 models a bit over two weeks ago. However, up until now, we didn’t know when Asus would begin its direct sales of the ROG XG Mobile (2025).

    Pricing and Specifications

The ROG XG Mobile (2025) has a starting price of $1,299.99 and comes equipped with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti laptop GPU, which features 12 GB of GDDR7 VRAM. Interestingly, you can also find this model available on Amazon US for the same price. On the other hand, the GeForce RTX 5090 laptop variant costs $2,499 and offers 24 GB of GDDR7 VRAM, while keeping Thunderbolt 5 (120 Gbps) connectivity, a revamped vapor chamber cooling system, and a 330 W integrated power supply.

    Availability Issues

At the moment, both RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5090 models are backordered at Newegg. Additionally, B&H Photo Video has plans to offer the RTX 5090 version, but this option is only marked as ‘coming soon’ right now. Unfortunately, Asus has only announced that the ROG XG Mobile (2025) will be priced from £1,399 in the UK, with no details on pricing for the Eurozone. Comparatively, the 2025 editions are priced at AU$4,999 and CA$1,999 in Australia and Canada, respectively.

    Early Reviews

In the meantime, early reviews from Cyber Dopamine and ETA Prime have highlighted the GeForce RTX 5090 variant. Both reviewers commend the performance uplift that the ROG XG Mobile (2025) offers for AAA gaming titles. Likewise, the RTX 5090 version shows impressive results in 3DMark Steel Nomad and 3DMark TimeSpy, closely trailing similar high-end gaming laptops.

The eGPU significantly enhances Geekbench 6 OpenCL scores by over three times when compared to the Radeon 890M iGPU found in a ROG Xbox Ally X. That said, gaming handhelds are restricted to USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 ports, meaning they can’t currently utilize the full potential of the eGPU’s Thunderbolt 5 bandwidth. Key Takeaways

    1. Limited Demo Experience: Nintendo has provided a chance to try out Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, but the demos only show brief parts of the game for the Switch 2, with a full release on December 4th.

    2. Gameplay Footage Highlights: Early gameplay clips reveal new locations and impressive graphics, even capturing the attention of players who aren’t die-hard fans of the series.

    3. Visual Improvements: Screenshots from the leaked footage show enhancements in detail, with sharper graphics and better depth compared to the 2024 reveal trailer, although some elements like foliage remain stationary.

    4. Smooth Gameplay Mechanics: The gameplay is reported to be fluid and fast, with quick transitions for Samus’s morph ball, offering a more dynamic experience than previous titles.

    5. Escort Missions Included: The game features escort missions where Samus must protect allies, as indicated by icons seen in the trailer, and the gameplay preview lasted around two hours, despite Nintendo’s request for testers to keep some details private.

Nintendo has given gamers a chance to try out Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, although the demos only showed brief parts of the game for the Switch 2. With the release set for December 4th, many fans still have unanswered questions. However, a lot of information is expected to come out on November 14th, as one preview of Metroid Prime 4 has already leaked. Although the YouTube video is now private, some viewers managed to capture their thoughts before it disappeared (watch out for spoilers).

    Exciting Gameplay Footage

A Spanish-speaking network released some lengthy playtest clips. These clips show moments that occur early in the game, but in new locations not seen before. Even though the YouTuber isn’t a die-hard fan of the Metroid Prime series, they still found the game impressive overall.

    Screenshots and Visual Upgrades

For those willing to dig deeper, users on Famiboards have shared some screenshots from the footage. One fan pointed out that certain scenes appear to be even better in detail than the ones in the 2024 reveal trailer. The trees and bushes look sharper, and the backgrounds have more depth. However, when navigating through these areas, the foliage remains stationary.

    Smooth and Fast Gameplay

Another viewpoint on the leaked Metroid Prime 4: Beyond preview is that the graphics are fluid. The action is quick, and Samus moves with a speed and elegance that hasn’t been seen in earlier titles. The morph ball transitions also seem to happen at a much quicker pace.

There’s a topic of discussion surrounding the portals in the Retro Studios project. While some fans have speculated that these could allow for time travel, that may not be true. Their role in the game could evolve later on, but in the footage, they act more like regular doors.

    Escort Missions Confirmed

In a recent trailer, players noticed icons indicating escort missions. The preview suggests that Samus must defend allies who are in trouble.

The broadcaster managed to play the game for around two hours and recorded 20 minutes of gameplay. Nevertheless, Nintendo has instructed testers to keep certain aspects of the game under wraps. The company has faced criticism for its minimal marketing ahead of the Metroid Prime 4 launch. Hopefully, for those interested in pre-ordering, it will resolve other worries after the upcoming wave of impressions hits the internet.
