Sony has begun rolling out a firmware update that brings a specialized low-latency Bluetooth profile to its flagship wireless headphones. The update, released on June 30, delivers version 3.1.5 to the WH-1000XM6 and version 1.3.0 to the WH-1000X The ColleXion, priced at $648. Users can download and install the new software directly through the Sony Sound Connect app, using the firmware update option found in the headphone settings menu.

A Universal Approach to Low-Latency Audio

The central addition in this release is support for the Bluetooth LE Audio Gaming Audio Profile, or GMAP. Developed under the Bluetooth SIG, this standardized profile is engineered to dramatically reduce audio delay, targeting total latency below 40 milliseconds. The specification breaks this down into 30 milliseconds allocated to wireless transmission and 10 milliseconds reserved for on-device audio processing. A further requirement mandates that the timing difference between the left and right earpieces never exceeds 100 microseconds, preserving a coherent stereo image.

Four Profiles for Speed and Stability

GMAP defines four distinct signal modes, labeled A through D, which allow the connection to adapt based on user preference or environmental conditions. Profile A prioritizes speed, aiming for latency figures even tighter than the standard 30-millisecond target. On the other end of the spectrum, Profile D is tailored for resilience, making it a better fit for areas congested with wireless interference where maintaining link stability is more critical than minimizing delay.

What distinguishes this gaming mode from the proprietary low-latency solutions often found in other headphones is its cross-platform nature. Because GMAP is baked directly into the Bluetooth specification, any supporting source device—regardless of brand—can leverage the feature, provided it also incorporates the standard. This means the benefit of dramatically reduced lag remains accessible across a broader ecosystem, rather than being confined to a single manufacturer’s hardware pairing.
