Sony has confirmed that it will stop releasing new PlayStation titles on physical discs beginning in January 2028, after which all new games will be distributed exclusively in digital form through the PlayStation Store and other online retailers. The policy shift drew immediate backlash from players who value physical media for collecting, long-term preservation, and the ability to resell or share games. Many in the community had hoped the negative reception might prompt a reversal, but fresh details from Sony’s manufacturing operations suggest the company is already too far along to turn back.

Restructuring begins at core disc production facility

According to reporting out of Austria, Sony has been laying groundwork for the all-digital transition for “quite some time.” The company’s major production plant in Thalgau, which currently manufactures PlayStation game discs, has initiated a significant operational restructuring well ahead of the 2028 deadline. The factory presently produces around 600,000 discs per day, with PlayStation titles making up roughly half of that output. Once new physical game releases end, company officials expect only a limited portion of the facility’s disc-related work will remain.

Rather than delaying action, Sony has already committed approximately €30 million to new manufacturing equipment designed to produce optical microlenses—precision components used in applications that demand highly accurate light control. One cited use case is advanced vehicle lighting systems capable of projecting turn signals and other indicators directly onto the road surface.

Workforce retraining and early mass production timeline

The operational pivot is not limited to hardware. Employees formerly assigned to disc production have reportedly begun moving into testing and development roles linked to the new manufacturing process. Sony intends to retrain existing staff so the facility can shift its focus without workforce reductions. Mass production of the optical microlenses is anticipated to start as early as 2027, a clear signal that the manufacturing transition will be in full swing well before the official end of physical game disc production.

A path Sony is unlikely to reverse

These behind-the-scenes moves help explain why a policy reversal looks increasingly improbable. The €30 million investment, ongoing employee reassignments, installation of new production lines, and the 2027 mass-production target all point to a long-term strategic commitment rather than a tentative announcement. With a sizeable portion of its physical disc infrastructure already being converted into a precision optics business, Sony appears to have moved decisively past the point where a return to large-scale game disc manufacturing would be practical.
